In a recent interview, Daniel Cormier weighed in on Jon Jones’ tarnished legacy.

Just a little over a month ago, after a prolonged absence due to a suspension brought about by a drug test failure, Jon Jones made a triumphant return to the Octagon and beat Daniel Cormier in an exciting contest that had fans on the edge of their seats. Jones, now responsible for the two defeats on Cormier’s record, not only won the light heavyweight belt back, he also finished his longtime nemesis inside the distance. The regaining of the belt coupled with the finish put Jones in the “greatest of all time” category among many fans and pundits.

Less than one month later, on August 22, 2017, USADA would flag Jones yet again for another failed drug test, this time for Turinabol, an anabolic steroid. He has since been placed on a provisional suspension until the results of a full adjudication process are completed. Needless to say, many are questioning the legitimacy of his possible “G.O.A.T.” status, Daniel Cormier included.

In an interview with the Fight Society podcast (H/T MMA Fighting), Cormier stated that Jones has likely tarnished his reputation beyond repair and probably doesn’t deserve the G.O.A.T. moniker so many were awarding him.

"I think enough is enough now honestly, if I've got to be honest with you. I think it's very difficult to consider someone the greatest of all time when there are these types of allegations tied to them. I think that’s probably the easiest and the best way I could say it right now without going too far in one direction, just because I don't know. I've said it before that he's the greatest of all time. I've been in there with him twice and I know that he's a tremendous fighter, and I do believe he would have had a ton of success without doing anything wrong. But when you start tying those negative things to your name and your legacy, it's kind of hard to say this guy is the best fighter of all time."

While resolute in his opinion of Jones’ legacy, Cormier still believes that people shouldn’t rush to judge “Bones” nor should the UFC strip the title from him until USADA’s investigation is completed.

"I think people owe that to Jon and his team and everybody else, USADA, to give them time to get all this stuff done. Get that B sample in, make sure everything is tested thoroughly, and then we can all start to move forward.” [...]

“I think people want resolution to it faster than it can be had. I'm just kind of sitting here taking it for what it is because right now what he has done has not been confirmed. Will it be confirmed? Maybe. But as of right now, he still is entitled to the process.”
