It didn’t take long for Santiago Ponzinibbio to pull off the biggest win of his UFC career.
The UFC Fight Night: Glasgow main event saw Icelandic welterweight contender Gunnar Nelson get off to a promising start against Santiago Ponzinibbio, only for Ponzinibbio to melt him with his heavy hands.
Nelson backed Ponzinibbio up straight away with a rear uppercut. Gunnar smashed home a leaping left hook on the Argentinian. A right hand rocked Nelson and had him scrambling. Ponzinibbio followed up with a massive left hook that felled Nelson for good. One more right hand and a short left was landed just for good measure, and the fight was over. The crowd as a whole almost fell silent, completely stunned as to what they just witnessed.
Official result: Santiago Ponzinibbio def. Gunnar Nelson by KO (punches) at 1:22 of round 1
This is the first time Nelson has ever been finished in his MMA career, and just the third time he’s lost. It’s a sensational triumph for Ponzinibbio, who has now won five straight and is well on his way towards a top-10 ranking in the welterweight division.
