Floyd Mayweather: I think Conor McGregor fight will happen, but ‘we’ll just wait and see’

Floyd Mayweather was in England to support his fighter, Gervonta Davis, but he was inevitably asked about fighting Conor McGregor.

After Gervonta Davis (18-0, 17 KOs) stopped Liam Walsh (21-1, 14 KOs) in England to successfully defend his IBF junior lightweight (130 lbs) title, BT Sport seized the opportunity to interview Davis’ promoter, Floyd Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs), and of course he was asked about getting back into the ring to fight UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. While Mayweather didn’t provide an answer to reporters when the topic of McGregor was brought up on Thursday, he did offer up something different on Saturday.

“If me and Conor McGregor do happen to make the fight happen, which I think the fight will happen, I would love for [Gervonta Davis] to be on the undercard,” Mayweather said. “I also would like [former WBC super middleweight champ] Badou Jack to be on the undercard, but tonight’s Tank night. Let’s talk about him. He’s done a great job, he’s done a tremendous job. I had a great career, and my career may not be over. Number 50 may be against Conor McGregor, we’ll just wait and see. But tonight is Tank night, he went out there and he looked brilliant, and I give him an A+.”

McGregor recently agreed to terms with the UFC for a mega showdown with one of the biggest boxing stars of all-time and the longtime pound-for-pound best. UFC president Dana White said that he was planning to negotiate with Mayweather’s team, which includes Al Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe, and we’d see from there whether or not Mayweather vs. McGregor will actually happen.

White also indicated that if the fight is made official, it’ll be a regular boxing event, “where it’s all about the main event, not the undercard.” In other words, no UFC co-promoting, which implies Mayweather Promotions will run the show.
