Streaking UFC lightweight contender Justin Gaethje is still very much interested in a fight with Conor McGregor, as ‘The Highlight’ revealed that he sent a direct message to ‘The Notorious’ pleading for a fight in Ireland. Gaethje posted a screenshot of the message on Twitter, which dates back March 31, 2019 “I’ve been waiting for a reply,” Gaethje posted on Tuesday. Gaethje, the former WSOF lightweight champion, is on a three-fight KO streak, notching first-round stoppage wins over James Vick, Edson Barboza and most recently Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone. Following his knockout win over Cerrone this past Saturday, the NCAA Division I wrestler called out McGregor at the UFC Fight Night 158 post-fight press conference, telling reporters at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena that he would ‘love’ to fight the former featherweight and lightweight champion. “He punched an old man in the face,” Gaethje said (via MMA Junkie). “I want to (expletive) him up for that. Far as I know, he’s retired. He’s in the rankings, so he either fights or he gets out. I absolutely would love to fight him.” Gaethje is also interested in facing the winner of the proposed lightweight title bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, who are teased to fight in the new year. Gaethje was originally expected to fight McGregor earlier this year but the bout fell through after McGregor reportedly broke his hand in training.
