The Nevada State Athletic Commission will consider McGregor’s request and make a ruling next week.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. owns Nevada. He has resided in the state for many years, hasn’t fought outside it since a 2005 bout with Sharmba Mitchell, and has had many dealings with the Nevada State Athletic Commission as a boxer and as a promoter. So it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that Conor McGregor, the man he meets in a boxing match in Las Vegas on August 26th, is looking to add one international judge to the mix for their bout.
In a conversation with Sky Sports, NAC chief Bob Bennett confirmed the request with an unintentionally amusing statement about why they’d consider it:
"The McGregor camp has requested an international judge. We will see if we think that's fair, and we will take it into consideration.
"We try to be flexible and adaptable. We're customer service orientated."
The commission will make their decision at a meeting on August 16th, the same day they consider the request from both Mayweather and McGregor to use eight-ounce gloves for the fight. Bennett also described the process of picking a referee for the fight, one that is aware of everything that could happen when an MMA fighter boxes a boxer:
"The referee that is approved will have a proven track record of working on high-profile fights, and a proven record of being consistent under pressure. He will be a world-class referee.
"He will keep an eye on both of them. It's a boxing match. I've had conversations with McGregor's manager to explain the rules and regulations. I explained that it's incumbent upon him that McGregor has an intimate understanding of these rules.
McGregor and Mayweather meet on August 26th in the T-Mobile Arena in Vegas.
