Middleweight boxing champion Gennady Golovkin discusses Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor.

Under normal circumstances, the middleweight championship bout between Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) and Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) would be the biggest boxing match of the year. Unfortunately for them, they’ve been upstaged by Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor, which will take place three weeks prior to their showdown.

Nevertheless, it’s still a massive fight that will have proper buildup, and both men have begun their media tours. After appearing in London earlier in the week, Canelo and GGG made their way to New York City. Both men appeared on The Luke Thomas Show on Tuesday with their respective Mayweather vs. McGregor takes.

Gennady Golovkin:

“This is not a fight. My fight with Canelo is a fight. This is show. Conor with Floyd is show — business show or a funny show, or for somebody’s interest show, not for us.

“It’s not for boxing. This is not for boxing. This is for people, for business. My fight with Canelo, this is boxing. This is true fight.

“You know, I respect McGregor [as] a UFC fighter, [but] he’s not a boxer. He’s a good fighter, he’s not a boxer."

Canelo Alvarez:

“I’ve been asked that throughout the day in many interviews. I really don’t have a comment about that fight, but I will say this- I think that the fans will speak, they’ll know what to do. They’ll know the difference between a sideshow and a real fight, and they’ll decide what they want to do.”

Golovkin vs. Alvarez will air live on HBO PPV from the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday, September 16th. At stake will be GGG’s WBA, IBF, and WBC middleweight championship belts.
