UFC commentator Joe Rogan would love to see McGregor take on Nick Diaz.
The Conor McGregor-Nate Diaz rivalry turned out to be one of the biggest talking points of 2016.
Diaz submitted ‘The Notorious’ at UFC 196 but McGregor walked away with a majority decision in the rematch at UFC 202, and both bouts generated some of the highest pay-per-view numbers in the promotion’s history.
Long time commentator Joe Rogan, though, believes that 2017 could feature an even bigger fight: McGregor vs. Nick Diaz.
“I think they missed the boat if they wanted to make the fu*king big money,” Rogan said on the Joe Rogan Experience earlier this week. “It’s Nick Diaz vs. Conor McGregor.”
The eldest Diaz brother hasn’t fought since 2015 but has still managed to keep his name in the headlines by calling out the likes of Tyron Woodley, who currently rules as the UFC welterweight champion.
Ex-UFC heavyweight talent Brendan Schaub, though, who features as a regular guest on Rogan’s podcasts, believes that Diaz is too big for McGregor.
Nate, who has spent the majority of his career competing at lightweight, fought McGregor at 170 lbs and had a relative size advantage over the Irishman. McGregor is the former featherweight champion and recently captured the 155 lbs strap at UFC 206.
Nick Diaz, however, is a natural welterweight and even went up to challenge the greatest middleweight of all time in Anderson Silva.
Since McGregor beat Eddie Alvarez in November, the SBG Ireland product has demanded a stake in the UFC and even hinted at a move to boxing after acquiring a California state boxing license last year.
Whilst no one knows what the future holds for McGregor or Diaz, it’s clear that both men will settle for nothing less than a mega-fight. Diaz, 33, even turned down a fight with former champ Robbie Lawler.
“I think Nick is like, ‘Look, I want a big, big name, or a title fight,’” Rogan said.
The Californian was recently cleared to fight after serving an 18-month suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission and is expected to return early this year.
