Earlier this week, reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones declared his next title defense would be against streaking contender Dominick Reyes, who recently disposed of Chris Weidman at UFC on ESPN 6.

“Just finished a coaches meeting studying Dominick and Cory‘s careers. Established Dominicks definitely the more dangerous fighter. Beating his ass next” Jones posted on Twitter.

Let’s get whimsical. The experience of watching the first UFC exists on a scale that’s somewhere between the knuckle-and-elbow soothers thrown between Rowdy Roddy Piper and Keith David in ‘They Live’, and New York schoolteacher Annie Edson Taylor intentionally becoming the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls. The commentary booth that night in Denver, Colorado is literally introduced with a burp while the fights are thoroughly smothered in blood. It’s not quite true daredevilry. But what becomes abundantly clear, while Gerard Gordeau curbstomps Kevin Rosier’s liver, is that everyone involved treated safety like it belonged in the vanguard.

Gregor Gillespie entered UFC 244 with an undefeated record and some hype behind him. But that all changed inside two and a half minutes of action when he ate a left kick to the jaw from Kevin Lee, knocking him out cold.

Gillespie spoke to MMA Fighting recently, where he says he remains in good spirits despite the nasty end to his 13-fight win streak.

There’s no exact science to star building in combat sports. Some great, fun athletes just don’t seem to click. Some become overnight sensations. There’s lots of work that promoters, PR reps, and well placed media appearances can do to help the whole process along, but often an athlete either has ‘it’ or they don’t.

After the third-round doctor stoppage of the UFC 244 headliner between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, both fighters called for an immediate rematch. UFC president Dana White, however, has some other plans for “Gamebred”, stating during a post-fight scrum that an instant part two doesn’t interest him as of the moment.
