The restraining order case against Tony Ferguson has come to an end.
The wife of the UFC star, Cristina Ferguson, filed a request for a temporary restraining order against Ferguson for her and their 2-year-old son March 13 in Orange County (Calif. ) family court, citing “threatening and violent behavior.” A hearing in the case was scheduled for April 5, but that did not happen, per Cristina Ferguson’s counsel’s request, and the temporary restraining order has expired, per court documents obtained by MMA Fighting.
“There are no matters pending in this case,” Cristina Ferguson’s attorney Jeffery L. Heath wrote in an e-mail.
No reason was given and Heath did not respond to further inquiries.
In her initial statement to the media last month, Cristina Ferguson wrote that she filed for the temporary restraining order in an effort to get her husband “the help necessary to continue being the best possible, as well as to pursue his passion and career as a UFC champion.” In her court filing, Cristina Ferguson requested that Tony Ferguson “undergo a psychiatric evaluation and follow any and all prescribed course of treatment and medication.”
“Tony Ferguson is a good husband and good father to our son,” the original statement read. “The current legal proceedings are a part of a process to ensure that Tony will receive the help necessary to continue being the best possible, as well as to pursue his passion and career as a UFC champion fighter. All positive well wishes are sincerely appreciated and I hope our privacy will be respected.”
Tony Ferguson was never arrested, nor charged with a crime and Cristina Ferguson did not file for divorce.
Cristina Ferguson wrote that she requested the temporary restraining order after Tony Ferguson allegedly took their son from her parents’ home and did not let her see the child for six days. The request also came after several calls made by the Santa Ana police to the Ferguson home in the preceding 14 months.
In the restraining order request, Cristina Ferguson was asking for full custody of their son. In recent days, Tony Ferguson has posted multiple photos of him with his son on Instagram. He wrote last month on social media that the UFC and his Paradigm management team were “helping me find the help we need.”
Cristina Ferguson described in her declaration to the court a series of what she described as “mental” breaks that her husband had been having. She wrote that in February, Tony Ferguson has increased delusions and paranoia. He “believed our son was Jesus Christ and [Tony] was the second Jesus Christ,” per Cristina’s declaration.
In the declaration, she described other instances of Tony Ferguson’s “frightening, irrational and paranoid behavior.” Cristina wrote that she had attempted on several occasions to take her husband for a psychological evaluation, but those attempts failed.
Tony Ferguson, 35, is the former UFC interim lightweight champion and regarded as one of the best 155-pound fighters in the world. He was expected to fight Max Holloway earlier this month for the interim title at UFC 236, but Dustin Poirier took his place and beat Holloway to become the interim champion, earning a shot at undisputed champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Tony Ferguson (24-3) has won 11 straight fights and is coming off a TKO victory over Anthony Pettis at UFC 229 last October. UFC president Dana White said last week that Ferguson must be evaluated by UFC doctors before making his Octagon return.
