Eddie Hearn says Saul Canelo Alvarez’s camp like the Billy Joe Saunders fight for Cinco de Mayo next May in 2020. Hearn is saying there’s “a very good chance” Saunders (28-0, 13 KOs) will get the fight with Canelo in early 2020.

Saunders needs to successfully defend his WBO super middleweight title against Marcelo Esteban Coceres (28-0-1, 15 KOs) on November 9 on DAZN. That’s considered gimme for Saunders, but it’s still an important fight because it’s taking place in the U.S on the undercard of KSI vs. Logan Paul at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

A lot of boxing fans will be watching the fight, and if Saunders looks poor, Canelo might not want to waste his time fighting him. Saunders didn’t look impressive in his last fight in beating Shefat Isufi by a 12 round unanimous decision last May to capture the vacant World Boxing Organization 168-lb title.

Hearn says Saunders has GOOD chance of getting Canelo fight next May
“I think there’s a very good chance, yes,” said Hearn to IFL TV when asked if there’s a possibility Canelo Alvarez will fight Billy Joe on Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend in May 2020.

“I know they like that fight. Who knows? It’s up to Canelo just like when it’s up to AJ in the heavyweight game. It’s up to Canelo. I’m smashing it out of the park,” Hearn said about the success he’s having in making fights and signing top names. “

If Canelo does face Saunders for his WBO super middleweight title, his resume will be looking impressive for his recent fights. Canelo is fighting WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev on November 2. Before that, Canelo defeated Daniel Jacobs, Gennadiy Golovkin and fought to a draw with GGG in their first fight.

Canelo would be seen by a lot of fans in picking the weakest link among the 168-lb champions if he goes after Saunders to fight for another title at super middleweight. That would be a bad look potentially for Canelo, because it would mean that he’s fighting yet another weakest link champion. Kovalev, 34, is viewed by a lot of boxing fans as the poorest of the four 175-lb champions.

Canelo arguably already beat the previous weakest link at 168 in his fight against former WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion Rocky Fielding last December. Canelo would impress fans more if he went after WBA Super World champion Callum Smith or WBC champ David Benavidez. Even IBF 168-lb champion Caleb Plant would be a better option for Canelo than Saunders.
