Angel Garcia, the trainer/father of WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia, thinks that HBO should be embarrassed that they put the fight between WBC 140lb champion Viktor Postol and WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford on pay-per-view last month.
Angel thinks it was a bad idea for HBO to have televised that fight, which is rumored to have brought in low PPV numbers. I think there’s a lot of boxing fans that agree with Angel about the Crawford-Postol fight being on HBO PPV. The fight wasn’t PPV worthy in the minds of many fans. Having to pay to see fighters that aren’t stars rubbed the fans the wrong, especially after the overpriced PPV disappointment from last year in the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight.
Top Rank was the promoter for Pacquiao in that promotional event last year, and there are a lot of angry about it still. Having Crawford-Postol on PPV so soon after the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight probably wasn’t the smartest idea. PPV should be only for huge fights or for stars. Crawford vs. Postol wasn’t a huge fight. Postol just some guy that beat Lucas Matthysse on an injury stoppage. Before that, Postol’s best win was against Selcuk Adyin. Were not talking about an established star in Postol.
“I ain’t wasting my money. HBO should be embarrassed,” said Angel to Fighthype.com about the Crawford vs. Postol fight. “Listen, the real champions, they don’t get no respect and they don’t get no exposure,” said Angel.
The Crawford vs. Postol fight went for between $49.99 and $59.99 on HBO PPV. It seemed like a really risky move by Top Rank, because there isn’t a market yet for either of those fighters to have their fights televised on HBO PPV.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum wants to turn Crawford into a PPV star. But just because Arum wants to turn Crawford into a star doesn’t mean he’s going to become one. There are things that Crawford needs for him to become a star and right now it doesn’t look like he’s going to get those things.
Crawford needs things for him to become a PPV star:
1. Better opposition. It’s highly unlikely that Crawford will become a PPV star fighting guys like Postol, Dierry Jean, Hank Lundy, Yuriorkis Gamboa and Thomas Dulorme. Crawford needs to fight and beat Errol Spence Jr., Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, Amir Khan and Kell Brook at welterweight. Crawford would also likely need to beat some 154lb and 160lb fighters like the Charlo brothers, Demetrius Andrade, Erislandy Lara, Julian Williams, Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs. I don’t see Arum matching Crawford against any of those fighters, so that puts him in a very, very bad position to become a PPV star.
2. Crawford needs to stop running and start fighting. He’s too focused not getting hit and that makes him boring to watch.
