Deontay Wilder responded back to Anthony Joshua on Monday in addressing the comments he made to media about wanting to jam a jab down his throat. Wilder (38-0, 37 KOs) took 7 hours to respond to Joshua’s message, and when he did, he didn’t like the way he worded his comments, and that he’s going to teach him how to talk.
Joshua (19-0, 19 KOs) said he couldn’t resist trash talking Wilder, because of all the negative comments that he’s continually making about him. Joshua included David Haye with that remark, and he says he’ll get around to facing both guys eventually. Wilder wants the Joshua fight to happen as soon as possible, like after their next title defenses.
Joshua defends this month against Kubrat Pulev. Wilder will be defending his WBC belt a week later against former WBC champion Bermane Stiverne (25-2, 21 KOs) on November 4 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Both champions are expected to win their mandatory defenses with flying colors. It’s up to Joshua if he wants to fight Wilder in his next fight after that. Wilder is ready to take the fight with Joshua in early 2018 if he’s game.

Joshua usually doesn’t talk trash to his opponents, but he wanted to get his own shot in to give Wilder something to think about. Joshua, 27, is confident that he’ll deal Wilder his first defeat of his career when they meet up inside the ring. Joshua isn’t saying when he’ll fight Wilder though, so it’s anyone’s guess when that unification fight will take place. Joshua sounds like he wants to make the fight with Wilder soon. It’s going to need to be soon for Joshua to avoid missing out on the fight. If Wilder slips up against Stiverne or one of his other challengers, then he can forget about a fight against Joshua. That’s not just Wilder’s loss. It would Joshua’s as well, because whoever beats Wilder likely won’t have anywhere near the same popularity as him.

Joshua said. ”I had to do it! All these guys talk about me all the time and it’s negative, always negative, but sooner or later I’ll be ramming my jab down their throat. It’s not a matter of if, it’s just a matter of when it comes to the likes of David Haye and Deontay Wilder because there has been no era of boxing where heavyweights, middleweights, welterweights haven’t come together. We have to fight each other and that’s just the way it’s going to go.”
It’s going to be interesting to see if Joshua can ram his fists down Wilder’s throat like he says he’s going to do. It might be Wilder who sticks his right-hand power shots down Joshua’s throat. The fight could come down to whichever fighter lands cleanly first get the win. Both guys hit hard enough to score a fast knockout. Wilder has been buzzed in the past by shots from Eric Molina and Nicolai Firtha. Wilder was able to fire back and knock both of those guys out, but it wasn’t a good sign that Wilder was hurt by those two guys.
It’s good news that Joshua is finally talking to Wilder through the media now instead of staying silent and letting him dump on him. By Joshua speaking up, it helps build interest for the Joshua-Wilder fight. The fight needs to be built right now if the two of them are going to be facing each other by the summer of 2018 like Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has been talking about wanting to happen.
Joshua lumping Wilder in the same boat as Haye must be viewed as a dig, as the two of them are now at distinct levels. Haye is coming off a loss to pumped up cruiserweight Tony Bellew from last March.
Haye did not look good in any way, shape or form in that fight. In comparison, Wilder is the undefeated WBC heavyweight champion, who has defended his WBC world title successfully 5 times since beating Stiverne by a 12 round unanimous decision 2 years ago in January 2015. Wilder vs. Joshua is the best fight that can be made in the heavyweight division. The two fighters need to face each other now, and then look to setup a rematch if possible. It’s too big of a fight for Wilder and Joshua to fight each other just once. They need to play it like the Gennady Golovkin vs. Saul Canelo Alvarez fight and face each other in a rematch.
Wilder and Joshua are going to face each other at some point. The heavyweight isn’t big enough for the both. One guy is going to have to give away to the other. Joshua is the upstart, the guy that is receiving a massive amount of hype due to him having an entire nation backing him. Wilder is still trying to carve a fan base in the U.S one win at a time the same way that middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin has done. Wilder’s many knockouts have impressed the boxing fans in the States. The only thing that’s missing is the big names. Wilder would be more popular now if he was knocking out well-known heavyweights instead of the obscure guys that he’s been feasting on. Wilder is fighting who is lined up for him by his management.
Wilder wants the fight against Joshua to take place in the U.S if possible. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn will probably want the fight in the UK. Joshua will make the decision, because he’s the A-side. Wilder isn’t in the position to try and call the shots because he doesn’t have the same cache as Joshua does.
