On Thursday, IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) shocked a lot of fans in the boxing community with his revelation that he was thinking of retiring after his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) on September 16.

Andre Ward’s trainer Virgil Hunter is offering former light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev a helping hand to get him back to the top of his game following his second consecutive defeat against Ward. Kovalev was stopped in the 8th round by Ward on June 17th after getting hit with 3 straight hard body shots that folded him in half.

Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) says he’s got a couple of ideas in how he plans on defeating Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) on September 16. Golovkin apparently has seen enough of Canelo’s fights to have a couple of game plans that he’s going to use when he gets the smaller, weaker Canelo inside the ring at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn wants WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (38-0, 37 KOs) to get his fighter #5 WBC Dillian Whyte (21-1, 15 KOs) a title shot in what would be a voluntary defense for Wilder in September or October or possibly later. Deontay has a mandatory defense due against Bermane Stivern, the #1 WBC ranked contender.

Middleweight kingpin Gennady “GGG” Golovkin has been criticized by others in the past including this writer but it turns out he is one of the smartest man in boxing. He has great management and his boxing choices cannot be taken for granted after what has happened recently in the boxing world.

GGG once complained he would fight anyone and was then challenged by then challenged by former super middleweight champion Andre Ward. GGG avoided that fight and after what the boxing world saw what happened to Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, I can’t blame him. The 34-year-old Kovalev is a bigger, stronger, faster and slightly younger version of the 35-year-old Golovkin.

Unbeaten #1 WBO heavyweight contender Hughie Fury (20-0, 10 KOs) will be taking a stay busy fight next month on July 8 against an opponent still to be determined at the Copper Box Arena in London, England.

This will be a 10 round affair for the 22-year-old Hughie, who recently suffered a back injury that caused him to miss out on a world title shot against World Boxing Organization champion Joseph Parker. The WBO didn’t demote the 6’6” Hughie in their rankings despite him having been out of action for the last 14 months.

On September 16, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez says he wants to make it clear to the boxing world that he’s better than Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Canelo doesn’t want the fight to be a close one, because he doesn’t want a second or third fight with him. He wants to dominate the way he’s been doing lately against guys like Amir Khan, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Liam Smith. Canelo hasn’t been involved in a close fight in the last 3 years since his 12 round split decision win over Erislandy Lara in 2014.

It was the summer of 2004 and the GB amateur boxing team was in Athens with its sole participant for the Olympic Games, Amir Khan. Khan was a phenom. Born in Bolton, into a Punjabi Rajputs family, he had started fighting competitively at eleven years of age. In his junior amateur days, he had won English school and junior AIBA titles, and in 2003 won gold at the Junior Olympics in Detroit, Michigan. By the time the Athens games rolled around, he was firmly positioned to explode into the senior amateur ranks and the national consciousness.

Sergey Kovalev wore a cap to the final press conference with the word “WAR” emblazoned across the front. Unfortunately for Kovalev, he did not appear to understand the full meaning of the word the following night in the ring with Andre Ward. As has been well documented, Ward (32-0, 16 KOs) retained his titles with an 8th round TKO victory over Kovalev (30-2-1, 26 KOs). Unfortunately, the discussions have been more about the low blows, the ineptitude of the referee, and the quick stoppage than about the performance of Ward.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez says he knows he’s going to beat Gennady Golovkin, and he’s always known that he was going to be the one to defeat him. Canelo says he doesn’t want to do a lot of talking but on September 16th, he’s going to show the boxing world what he’s already know when he meets up with the 35-year-old Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs).

As every reader would know by now, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor Mcgregor will face each other in Las Vegas on August 26. Virtually every article or post that I have read about the fight is about Floyd completely dominating Connor and how much of a mismatch this fight is. However, there is still a question that no one seems to be asking, maybe because we simply won’t know the answer until fight night.

Former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and current IBF/WBA champ Anthony Joshua traded trash talk earlier today in going back and forth about how they fought Wladimir Klitschko in beating the Ukrainian fighter. Joshua said Fury’s 12 round unanimous decision win over Wladimir in 2015 was a boring one that lacked action.
