The Philadelphia 76ers are nearing a deal that would send Jahlil Okafor to the Brooklyn Nets, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe. The deal would include Nik Stauskas and a 2019 second-round pick, while Philadelphia would receive Trevor Booker, per Lowe.

A deal would end a long stalemate between the 76ers and Okafor, who has publicly stated his desire to be traded. Okafor was the third overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft, but he has only played two games this season in a crowded Philadelphia front court that left no real minutes for the one-time lottery pick.

Okafor has been broadly supported by his NBA peers, an unusual move for a player who has requested a trade. Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Draymond Green all posed with Okafor’s dad while he wore a “FREE JAH” shirt, while Devin Booker also tweeted “FREE JAH.”

It’s safe to say that Okafor was failed by The Process. Okafor publicly requested a trade or a buyout on Nov. 1 this season, and the team declined his $6.3 million team option. Philadelphia struggled to trade Okafor, however, due to a number of reasons. They had little leverage, and there are questions about Okafor’s skill set, which is light on defense and ball dominant.

Philadelphia owe Okafor a trade. In fact, they owed it a long time ago. Any trade involving Okafor is a good thing because closure was needed, both for the big man and the franchise.

Still, the 76ers could have just cut Okafor. Instead, they gave up Nik Stauskas — who had only played 45 minutes this season after nearly 4,000 the previous two seasons — and a second round pick acquired from the Knicks. Those are two small assets, but they are assets nonetheless. That likely means that the 76ers think Booker can be a positive player for them.

How? That’s less clear. Booker came into the league as an old school power forward, but that model doesn’t cut it in the modern NBA. Instead, the Nets have increasingly played Booker at center, where his rebounding can make an impact. Booker occasionally pops out for three-pointers, but shooting isn’t his strength.

All that would put Booker into a minutes battle with Amir Johnson, who serves as Joel Embiid’s primary backup. Of course, Philadelphia also has poor Richaun Holmes hanging out on the bench, a solid player who has only made it into nine games this season. It’s unlikely Booker would play any minutes at power forward in Philadelphia, given Ben Simmons and Dario Saric usually fill the four. At the very least, he’s another veteran in the locker room for a team that’s making a playoff push.

Okafor is a reclamation project, something that Brooklyn is becoming adept at. Nets general manager Sean Marks really had no choice when he came into lead the front office, since his first round picks were depleted with less-than-ideal trades. He has combed the scrapheap for picks ever since, occasionally hitting on players like Spencer Dinwiddie.

Okafor is talented, and perhaps a patient coach and organization could mold him into a plus NBA player. That describes the Nets perfectly.
