Iman Shumpert continues to speak his mind on issues surrounding race relations within the United States. Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel for the Star Spangled Banner to highlight perceived racial disparities in policing has prompted a national discussion on patriotism, systemic racism, and appropriate forms of non-violent discussion.

In a recent song, Shumpert indicated he would follow Kaepernick’s lead and kneel himself. He then noted separately he would need to speak to the Cavs organization first.

Today, Shumpert announced via Instagram that he does not plan on kneeling when the season kicks off next month. Instead, he plans on raising money for families of those impacted by fatalities in the line of police work. His goal is to “improve the struggle between the badge of the citizen.” Hopefully this can a uniting principle, but these issues rarely get framed in such a way.

Many cops do a great job every day and want what is best for the people of their communities. Most people do their best to live and provide for their families. Those that fight for our country or serve our country are heroes and deserve to be treated as such. The country isn’t perfect. Non-violent means to improve society should be commended and encouraged. It isn’t necessary for Iman Shumpert to do this, but it’s impressive all the same.
