There is finally some clarity on where things stand on the coaching front for the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was reported by Chris Haynes two weeks ago that the Cavs coaching staff were incredibly frustrated as they had not been signed to new contracts. Damon Jones, James Posey, Jim Boylan, and Phil Handy are all were reportedly stuck in limbo heading into next season without deals. That situation has reportedly changed significantly.
According to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, they are renegotiating the terms of Larry Drew's contract and have locked up the rest of the coaching staff:
Meanwhile, the Cavs are renegotiating the contract of assistant coach Larry Drew, who is set to become head coach Tyronn Lue's chief assistant and associate head coach. Drew, formerly a head coach for both Atlanta and Milwaukee, is under contract in Cleveland for another season (his third), but the new role warrants a bump in pay, and the two sides are negotiating a price.
The rest of Lue's staff is under contract for the upcoming season.
This is obviously great news, as stability hasn't always been the calling card for the Cavaliers organization. The coaching staff did a wonderful job with the team last season, as well as adjusting to the changeover from David Blatt to Tyronn Lue. It's interesting that there's no major changes to the assistant coaches, considering they would all be picks made by Blatt.
That being said, if Lue really was the one that the team and coaching staff was responding to throughout Blatt's time with the team, then this makes some sense. Things will always be a little weird with the Cavs. But once Drew's contract is renegotiated and set in stone, the team will have one less thing to worry about.
Now, if they could only just sign J.R. Smith.
