The Celtics will waive journeyman swingman John Holland, reports The Verticalโs Shams Charania. The Celtics have subsequently issued a release confirming they have waived Holland. The BU alum signed a two-year, non-guaranteed contract with the Celtics in April, but only played one minute in the second game of the Hawks series.
Holland has potential offers in the NBA and Europe, a source told CelticsBlog.
Holland was a long shot to make the Celticsโ roster, competing with R.J. Hunter, James Young and Ben Bentil for the final spot. The move is a vote of confidence for Hunter and Young, who fill the same role as Holland but show more potential as a shooter and scorer.
The Bronx native starred at BU under current Penn State coach Pat Chambers, leading the Terriers to an NCAA Tournament berth in 2011. Holland then went undrafted and began his career in the French second division. Holland played in the summer league each year until he signed with Turkish giants Besiktas for the โ14-โ15 season.
Holland signed with the Canton Charge the day before Christmas Eve last year, where he averaged 16.0 points per game in 37 contests. Holland, who turns 28 on November 6, will try to find a roster spot in the NBA before looking at another year in Europe, where the contracts are significantly more lucrative than in the D-League.
