Tyreke Evans trade likely for Celtics, Nuggets, or 76ers, per report

The Boston Celtics, the Denver Nuggets, and the Philadelphia 76ers all remain front-runners for Tyreke Evans, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The Memphis Grizzlies guard is having his best season since winning Rookie of the Year in 2010, and the Grizzlies are intent on dealing him before the Feb. 8 trade deadline.
Wojnarowski also reports that the Miami Heat are in play for Evans, too.
Evans is averaging 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists this season, with a True Shooting Percentage above 56. He has not played since Jan. 29, after which the Grizzlies shut him down with intentions to deal him. Since Memphis is holding out for the best offer, this deal may occur until the Grizzlies near the 3 p.m. ET deadline on Thursday.
Despite Evans’ breakout year — this is the most efficient season of his career, and he has only averaged 19 points per game one other time — the Grizzlies’ record is only 18-34, firmly middle of the pack. They’ve committed to selling at the deadline, and Evans, on a one-year deal worth $3.3 million, is a perfect candidate to add bench scoring to a contending team.
More often than not, Kyrie Irving is the only reliable shot creator for the Celtics. It’s no surprise that Boston scores 108.4 points per 100 possessions when Irving plays, but that figure tumbles to 99 points per 100 possessions when he sits.
The Celtics have been shopping Marcus Smart for a first-round pick, and that pick could then be used in a potential Evans deal. (Boston is also interested in Lou Williams, per The New York Times’ Marc Stein. It is likely every team on this list has some interest in him, though, as he’s a bench scorer similar to Evans.) It would also send out Smart for an asset before his free agency this summer, where Boston may let the polarizing, defensive-minded guard walk for nothing.
Evans probably won’t help the Nuggets’ defense much, which has been their foremost failure this season. But the team could swap him straight up for Emmanuel Mudiay, the 21-year-old who the Nuggets apparently now see as expendable given their talented guards ahead of him — Jamal Murray, Gary Harris, and Will Barton.
The Nuggets are currently sixth in the Western Conference standings, and a potential playoffs appearance would end a five-year drought. Denver’s interest in Evans shows they aren’t taking any chances, even if Evans isn’t exactly an elixir for their most significant ailment.
The 76ers have a gaping hole in their rotation: A shot creator off the bench, someone who can reliably score and generate offense while Joel Embiid sits. That role should have gone to Markelle Fultz. Instead, the first overall pick may sit out an entire season.
Evans would provide that, and the 76ers are currently neck and neck with the Detroit Pistons for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons made a significant move for Blake Griffin; a smaller deal for Evans might help Philadelphia immensely.
Boston has the most to offer, but they will likely be judicious in how much they give up. Denver seems desperate, but if their only offer is Mudiay, then the Grizzlies may not be swayed. I could see the 76ers swooping in with their first-round selection in this instance, but they may prefer Williams. That’s the trickiest part about predicting this — Williams is a better scorer, but some teams may prefer Evans for his more complete game. It’s impossible to predict which prefers which, and that makes this scenario dicey.
I’d guess Philadelphia gets Williams, and Boston ends up with Evans, but there’s no clear certainty until Thursday’s deadline.
