The Chicago Bulls announced today that they have waived second year, third-string point guard Kay Felder.

The 5-foot-9-inch Felder who the Bulls claimed off waivers in mid-October averaged 3.9 points per game on 30.3 percent from the field in 14 games in Chicago, initially receiving significant minutes. After Kris Dunn returned from his finger injury, head coach Fred Hoiberg mostly relegated Felder to garbage-time minutes or did not play him at all.

Felder becomes an unrestricted free agent on Thursday if he isn’t claimed off of waivers by another team. Felder’s contract with the Bulls wasn’t fully guaranteed and the cap hit from his contract will approach $490,000 unless another team claims him off waivers and assumes that contract.

In his time in Chicago, Felder was a chucker. He averaged 17.7 field goal attempts per 36 minutes which was the second highest rate on the team behind Nikola Mirotic. Obviously, his 30.3 percent shooting percentage suggests he wasn’t effective with all that shooting.

The Bulls now have an open roster spot. It could mean a heavy dosage of Antonio Blakeney moving forward.

In seven G League games this season, Blakeney has averaged 37.9 points per game on 51.4 percent from the field (49.2 percent from 3-point land). He’s also averaged 4.7 assists which is a bit of a revelation as he’s often criticized for being purely a scorer at the expense of helping his teammates.

The Bulls will now carry just two point guards on the active roster until Cameron Payne returns from his foot injury sometime in the next five weeks.
