The Los Angeles Lakers are signing guard Gary Payton II to a two-way NBA contract, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Payton — the son of NBA Hall of Famer and former Laker Gary Payton — will join the team in Memphis for Los Angeles’ game against the Grizzlies on Monday, league sources said. Payton is expected to see extended time with both the Lakers and their G League affiliate, South Bay.

Payton was released by the Milwaukee Bucks on Dec. 17, and the Lakers began targeting him for a deal in recent days. Payton’s father had an iconic NBA career while playing for George Karl, whose son, Coby, is head coach of South Bay.

The Lakers have won four games in a row, but have listed starting point guard Lonzo Ball as questionable for Monday’s game because of left knee soreness.
Payton wasn’t selected in the 2016 NBA draft and landed with the Houston Rockets on a free-agent deal. He played 18 games with the Milwaukee Bucks the last two seasons. Payton played his final two collegiate seasons at Oregon State.
