The epic rivalry of ADMU (@ateneodemanilau) and DLSU (@DLSUManila) reached fever pitch during the end of #UAAPSeason80 Round 1 games last weekend, as fans from each university went on a Tweeting frenzy to celebrate their teams’ performance. The atmosphere stayed positive on Twitter, despite the heated on-court battle between the top two teams of the season so far.

As a LIVE platform, Twitter shows what’s happening in the world of #UAAPSeason80. Below are interesting data related to the conversation about #UAAPSeason80 on Twitter (9 September - 9 October 2017).

Top 5 Most Talked About Universities

@ateneodemanilau finished top of the league standings in Round 1, but other universities are rallying their teams and leading the conversations on Twitter. University of the East (@Official_UE) leads the pack on Twitter, followed by De La Salle University (@DLSUManila) in second, and Adamson University (@AdamsonUni) in third. University of the Philippines @upsystem and Ateneo de Manila University (@ateneodemanilau) follow in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Top 5 Most Talked About Players

Twitter conversations were not limited to @ateneodemanilau and @DLSUManila players. Stars of other UAAP teams have also been successful at delivering unforgettable plays and becoming the most popular topics of conversation among fans. The UAAP community has been using Twitter to share their insights on the games in real time, and the spotlight is shed on a handful of UAAP men’s basketball players who have earned the utmost admiration of Twitter fans this year.

The Rivero brothers dominate the court week by week, but Prince (@priiincerivero) earned the title of being the most talked about #UAAPSeason80 basketball player on Twitter. His assists and sweet moves on the court proved that he is a valuable part of the team. His impressive shot during the last 25 seconds of their game against the NU Bulldogs (@NationalUPhil) solidified the Archers’ victory.

Following his brother’s footsteps, Thirdy Ravena (@ThirdyRavenaaa) is making a name for himself as one of UAAP’s most promising athletes. Ravena has been dropping some incredible stunts this season like his two-handed dunk during their match against the UE Red Warriors (@BombaUE).

Brent Paraiso (@brentparaiso) was warmly welcomed into the team in 2016; Coach Aldin Ayo (@coachaldinayo) immediately saw potential in Paraiso that averaged 7.9 points. This year, he’s back on the court and better than last year. He earned the respect and admiration of Twitter fans every time he would get on the court; during their game against Ateneo, he attempted to level the score but Matt Nieto (@bigmikenieto) and Antonio Asistio (@_antonasistio) prevented that from happening.

Aljun Melecio (@AljunJayMelecio) wowed the crowed during the opening week of the season. His teammate Ben Mbala’s absence was not felt for Melecio’s efforts during their game against the FEU Tamaraws (@FEU_Tamaraws). His 29 points, 6-rebounds, 2-assists, and 2-steal game made him the 4th most talked about #UAAPSeason80 basketball player on Twitter.

Green Archers’ captain, Kib “Man of Steal” Montalbo (@kibmontalbo), is having a fantastic year. Despite having a rough start into the season, the team captain was able to bounce back and lead the team to victory against the different universities.

As we bid farewell to round one of the season, the Ateneo Blue Eagles remain on top of the table with seven wins, and a strong desire to keep their zero-loss record untarnished. They are closely followed by the De La Salle Green Archers with five wins and two loses; one was against the Fighting Maroons.
