The Cardinal became the first No. 1 seed to be eliminated from the women's tournament with a loss to the Rebels in the second round. Stanford, which reached the Final Four last year and won the national title in 2021, will miss the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2007.
Playing at No. 1 Stanfordโs home arena, eighth-seeded Mississippi led almost the whole way until just over a minute remained, when the Cardinal tied the score. At that point, it appeared that the Rebelsโ bid for a remarkable upset would come up painfully short.
Instead, it was the Cardinal that let the contest slip away, and Ole Miss took advantage for a 54-49 win.
Stanford became the first No. 1 seed to be eliminated from the womenโs tournament, and just the fifth top seed since 1994 to get knocked out before the Sweet 16 (per ESPN). The Cardinal, which reached the Final Four last year and won the national title in 2021, will miss the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2007.
