Puerto Princesa, Philippines, 06 September 2019 – Baguio City was declared champion after bagging the greatest number of gold medals in the recently-concluded Batang Pinoy National Finals in Puerto Princesa City. More than 600 gold medals were awarded to the top performing athletes during the closing ceremonies held at Puerto Princesa City Coliseum.

In addition to Baguio’s 61 gold medals, the winning province earned 45 silver medals and 70 bronze medals. Meanwhile, the Queen of the South, Cebu City took second place with 36 gold medals, 34 silver medals, and 35 bronze medals. Davao City was not far behind with 31 gold medals, 30 silver medals, and 41 bronze medals in total.

Over 8,500 athletes from 249 cities and provinces nationwide saw action in the prestigious youth tournament and vied for the top honors in their respective disciplines.

Together with the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Puerto Princesa City, Province of Palawan, and leading beverage brand MILO, the Philippine Sports Commission’s (PSC) Batang Pinoy, headed by Chairman William Ramirez, continues to champion Filipino youth athletes and uplift the sporting community through grassroots sports.

Providing Opportunities for All Through the years, Batang Pinoy has opened its doors to all young athletes across the country for an opportunity to compete and display their mettle against the best talents in the country. Both the student-athletes and out-of-school youth have found a common stage in Batang Pinoy, making sports inclusive for all.

“We are happy to be among the supporters of PSC’s Batang Pinoy National Finals that has been a proponent of getting more young Filipinos into sports,” said Lester P. Castillo, MILO Sports Manager.

Further highlighting the values learned in sports, MILO’s partnership with PSC through the Batang Pinoy underscores this important aspect in fostering the skills and talents of young athletes in the country. “We believe that sports teach children character-forming values such as Teamwork, Discipline and Confidence. These are the same values that children need to be successful later on in life as they continue to pursue their ambitions. The PSC’s Batang Pinoy has long advocated for the development of physical qualities and moral values, a vision that we at MILO share with them,” Castillo said. The collaboration between the two parties solidifies MILO’s commitment to grassroots development which includes the MILO Summer Sports Clinics, MILO Little Olympics, MILO Brgy.

Liga and the National MILO Marathon.

Push for Athlete Development At the opening ceremonies, it was revealed that the PSC and DepEd, represented by Sec. Leonor Briones, are working together to build the country’s first-ever Sports Academy. This milestone is a stride towards improving the sports programs in the country and instilling life lessons among the youth that can only be learned from entering competitions.

It was also announced that PSC has rolled out a program that will help identify the strengths and weaknesses of young athletes in order to direct them towards the correct sports program that will help them become better athletes in the coming years.

Called the Philippine Sports Institute-Sports Mapping Action Research Talent Identification, PSC tested more than 1,000 athletes from 27 sports during the Batang Pinoy National Finals. This campaign aims to provide the right training that will help them in their career as athletes.

“These unprecedented development entails a brighter future for grassroots sports development in the Philippines,” said Castillo. “We are very fortunate to have been given a chance by the PSC to support the National Finals of Batang Pinoy. Hopefully our team can find ways to continue the collaboration with the PSC in preparation for future Batang Pinoy programs. Such partnerships can continue enabling the youth to become champions not only in sports but also in life.”
