LOS ANGELES: On Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila), visitors entering the Wild Card Gym where WBA regular welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao was scheduled to spar had this notice on a white board to read: “Thurman is slower than (a brand of ketchup). Manny will beat him 57 ways on July 20.”

Signed Freddie Roach.

This writer immediately sought the gym owner after the 10-round sparring session, currently Pacquiao’s training consultant in his coming fight with fellow WBA titlist Keith Thurman to ask him where did he get the message and what was he trying to convey.

His answer was he got it from a television commercial of that particular ketchup brand which shows the very slow flow of the ketchup from the bottle.

“It means Thurman is much, much slower than how the ketchup flows from the bottle, right?” Fred Sternberg, President of a communication company that manages sports public relations, interjected laughing.

And what about the phrase “Manny will beat him 57 ways on July 20?” this writer again asked.

“Well, you see, the brand is advertised to have 57 varieties, which means Manny will beat Thurman as many times the number of that brand’s varieties,” the seven-time “Trainer of the Year” awardee of the Boxing Writers Association of America explained with a wide grin.

“July 20, of course pertains to the date of the on July 20 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas,” he added.

Roach later clarified that although his message was made to lend humor to what is already turning out a word war between Pacquiao and Thurman’s camps, it can’t be denied that many believed in what it tried to convey.

That the Filipino boxing sensation will win the fight.

“After lagging behind the odds in the early going Manny is now leading in the betting,” Roach further explained. “I am just trying to dramatize what is obvious.

Sternberg agreed, saying: “It’s in the bag. He’s (Pacquiao) our boy.”

The happy afternoon ending capped another day of a tough, hectic schedule for the eight-division champ that included an early morning run at the Pan Pacific Park.

Pacquiao, in fact, was able to rest only after entertaining old nemesis –turned close friend and fellow future Hall of Famer Erik Morales, who interviewed him on Mexican television at his residence along Plymouth St., Hancock Park.

A new sparring partner in Lazaro Lorenzana, a former amateur standout from San Diego, took over from Jesse Roman who was indisposed.

Lorenzana, a Mexican who can be mistaken as a Filipino because of his appearance, gave a good account of himself in five rounds although he admitted later he could not cope up with the fighting senator’s speed and strength.

AB Lopez, who has been testing Pacquiao’s mettle since arriving here two weeks ago looked to have accustomed to the Filipino’s style by trying to be aggressive only to fall out in the final two of his five-round stint, complaining of the Pacman’s vastly improved showing.

“Manny’s getting better and better. He’s just too good, too fast and too strong,” Lopez said later.

Singapore-based martial arts promotion ONE Championship recently touched base with their partners and potential investors in the Philippines during the ONE:NXT Philippines event in partnership with ABS-CBN last Thursday, 27 June at the Shangri-La at the Fort in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

ONE:NXT Philippines brought together some of the country’s biggest senior leaders and key decision makers from top brands, agencies and the media, as well as industry experts and athletes to discuss how ONE Championship is helping shape the future of sports in the media and in business in the Philippines and in the world.

The opening address was given by none other than ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong, who shared with the audience ONE’s story of success and how they were able to emerge into a billion-dollar property by celebrating Asia’s greatest cultural treasure: martial arts, as well as the heroes that it has brought forward.

“I really believe that together, we can change the world, that together, we can millions, even billions of lives through values, heroes, and stories, so I challenge you to be the hero and make a difference with your good fortune, because at the end of the day, we are ONE,” Sityodtong declared on stage.

“It’s great to get all the brands and agencies together to celebrate Asia’s greatest cultural treasure and the deep-rooted values of integrity, humility, honor, respect, courage, discipline, and compassion, but more importantly, to think about how we can work together for the next generation, and this kind of event is just phenomenal, and I genuinely think that we’re gonna lead the way in terms of the future of global sports together,” Sityodtong said of the event.

Next to take the stage was Dino Laurena, Head of Integrated Sports for ABS-CBN, the Philippines’ biggest media outlet and ONE Championship’s broadcast partner in the country.

ONE and ABS-CBN have been working hand-in-hand since 2016, and together, they have helped bring the sport of mixed martial arts to new heights and have helped shape some of the country’s biggest names in the sport, including ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera and two-tme ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, who proudly represent the Philippines everytime they step into the ONE cage.

Laurena spoke of the commonalities of ONE and ABS-CBN in sharing stories and building heroes, something that they have successfully done in their three-year partnership so far.

“I believe that there’s a lot that could be learned and taken from the sports stories that surround athletes, and what better way to share it in a world that is exciting, interesting, and at the same time real,” Laurena said. “ONE Championship is in a very good trajectory, they have actually put together the best of what Asia is, to be shared to the rest of the world in a sports property, it’s absolutely unique and truly, there is a very strong future for ONE Championship and everything that it embodies.”

Five personalities from different sectors all took part in a Fireside Chat, as Games and Amusements Board of the Philippines Chairman Abraham Kahlil Mitra, Dentsu Aegis Network Philippines Group CEO Donald Lim, Team Lakay founder and head coach Mark Sangiao, Submission Sport Philippines and Fighting Chance Foundation Erwin Tagle, and sports.abs-cbn.com Combat Sports Editor Santino Honasan all sharing their insight on how the sport of mixed martial arts and ONE Championship has grown in the Philippines in terms of popularity and in presence in the digital world.

“We’re very excited with the ONE Championship property,” said Lim. “We realize that you are not just selling martial arts, but really the values, the humanity, the stories behind the heroes. I think the agencies, we really look forward to collaborating with [ONE Championship] because when we face a client, a brand, we are not just selling the spots or the reach of how many people are looking, but it’s really selling the values of the sport. I think brands, eventually, will soon be more open to this possibility, because in the end, most brands would also want to share those same values.”

A pair of Filipino mixed martial arts stars then conducted a martial arts demonstration, with Team Lakay’s reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua “The Passion” Pacio and former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio showing the audience the skills that make up a world champion.

Vera and Folayang, arguably the biggest names in Filipino mixed martial arts today, were also part of an Athlete Panel, wherein they spoke about their journeys and their upcoming challenges.

Closing out the night’s festivities was ONE Championship Head of Corporate Partnerships & Strategic Sales for the Philippines John Morris, who assured the audience of big things to look forward to with ONE Championship and the Philippines in the future.

The ONE:NXT Philippines event, the first of its kind, was no doubt a way for the largest global sports media property in Asian history to not only strengthen its ties with one of their biggest markets in the Philippines, but also welcome new potential partnerships and allies to help in taking global sports to the next level in the coming years.

The NBA Finals may have ended just a week ago, but the new faces of the upcoming season are already set to join their future organizations.

The Pelicans will have the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft held Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. ET at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. and have been the recent center of much of the league's buzz after sending Anthony Davis to the Lakers for a bundle of players and picks.

Former Duke freshman Zion Williamson is a virtual lock to be the No. 1 overall pick in a draft that is deemed by many to only have three potential stars (Williamson, Ja Morant and RJ Barrett). With a lack of sure-fire prospects making up the bulk of the first round, trades among teams are likely to be frequent and plenty.

Last year's top five picks consisting of Deandre Ayton, Marvin Bagley III, Luka Doncic, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Trae Young were part of a class for the ages - for the first time since the 1984-85 season, all five picks made the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

Below is the complete list of all NBA Draft picks in 2019 from No. 1 overall to No. 60.

How many rounds are in the NBA Draft?

The NBA Draft consists of only two rounds, the fewest of the four major North American sports leagues. Start to finish, 60 players will be drafted from the 2019 class.

How is the NBA Draft order determined?

The order of the NBA's first round is set by a lottery and the NBA's regular season. The first four picks were determined during May's draft lottery, won by the Pelicans with a 6.0 percent chance of landing the No. 1 overall pick.

The Grizzlies, Knicks and Lakers filled out pick Nos. 2-4 while the other lottery teams pick in inverse order of the regular-season standings.

Pick Nos. 15-30 in the first round and the entire second round also are determined by regular-season record.

OAKLAND, USA (AFP) - An upstart Toronto Raptors squad dethroned defending champion Golden State on Thursday, defeating the Warriors 114-110 to win the NBA Finals and capture the first crown by a club from outside the United States.
Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam each scored 26 points while Kawhi Leonard and reserve Fred VanVleet both had 22 as Toronto won the best-of-seven series four games to two.

Leonard was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player for the second time in his career after the first in 2014 with San Antonio, which traded him to Toronto last July.

“Last summer I was going through a lot. I just kept working hard and had my mind set on this goal right here,” Leonard said. “This is why I play basketball. This is what I work hard for. I’m glad to see it all pay off.”

The Raptors became the first Canadian club to win a major North American sports title since the 1993 Toronto Blue Jays captured Major League Baseball’s World Series.

“It means a lot for our city and the country and for these players,” Raptors coach Nick Nurse said, who didn’t mind not winning it at home. “You get the win and you’re just happy you got it and celebrate that fact.”

The Raptors spoiled the Warriors’ farewell appearance at Oracle Arena. Golden State’s home since 1971 will be replaced by a new $1 billion venue in San Francisco next season.

“To be able to celebrate with these guys is awesome,” Siakam said, his Cameroon homeland flag draped around his shoulders.

“It’s a dream to have achieved this,” Spanish center Marc Gasol said. “I’ve never worked so hard.”

Klay Thompson scored 30 points to lead the Warriors but left the game with a left knee injury late in the third quarter after landing awkwardly on his left leg.

It was the latest setback for an injury-hit Golden State team that was already without two-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Kevin Durant, who returned in game five Monday after being sidelined for a month only to FROM PAGE 16
suffer a ruptured right Achilles tendon.

“Tough, tough way to go out,” Curry said. “I think a lot has been proven about who we are as a team and the adversity we faced throughout the playoff run.

“The DNA and character we have on this team, I wouldn’t bet against us being back on this stage next year and going forward.”

Andre Iguodala added 22 points for the Warriors, Stephen Curry had 21 and Draymond Green contributed 11 points, 18 rebounds and 13 assists.

“Everybody on this team played with a lot of heart,” Green said. “We just came up a little short.”

Golden State had a final shot to win trailing 111-110 but Curry missed a 3-pointer and Green called a timeout when the team had none, setting up three final free throws by Leonard to seal the victory.

The Warriors failed in their bid for a third consecutive title and to become the first team in 50 years to win four titles in five seasons.

Toronto’s triumph made this the first NBA Finals where road teams won five consecutive games.

Lowry scored 21 points in the first half to give Toronto a 60-57 lead, hitting 7-of-10 shots from the floor and 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Thompson led the Warriors with 18 first-half points.

Iguodala scored six points in a 14-4 Warriors run, joining Curry and Thompson in hitting 3-pointers in the spurt to give Golden State an 80-76 advantage just before disaster struck again.

Thompson landed awkwardly on his left leg on a missed shot and went to the floor writhing in pain, being helped to the locker room with a knee injury as the Warriors called a timeout.

Walking to the locker room, Thompson turned back and returned to the court, a standing crowd screaming with delight to see him sink two free throws.

The Los Angeles Lakers drafted Talen Horton-Tucker out of Iowa State with the 46th overall pick in the second round of Thursday night's 2019 NBA draft. The Lakers acquired the 46th pick through a trade with the Orlando Magic. The 18-year-old averaged 11.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals across 35 games in his lone season at Iowa State. Horton-Tucker is the Lakers' only selection of the night, as they included their No. 4 overall pick in the trade package to land Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans.

"Talen Horton-Tucker is a first round talent. Unique player at 6-4, 240, 7-1 wingspan with ball skills. Really needs to continue improving his body and decision making but the ability is there. Interested to see how he develops in LA" - Mike Schmitz

L.A.'s decision to trade into the second round might at least in part be due to the team's financial flexibility following the Davis trade. Even at his age, Horton-Tucker could be asked to play important minutes as a rookie. AP

"I just try to play every game like it's Game 7 of the NBA Finals."
