Robin defends Agot's right to her opinion, calls for unity

MANILA - Last week, a Facebook post from actress Agot Isidro calling President Rodrigo Duterte a "psychopath" went viral. In her rant, Isidro criticized Duterte's hard-nosed stance that he would rather die of hunger than accept aid from superpowers such as the United States that wish to meddle in his war against illegal drugs.

She was reacting to the President's claim that the Philippines will survive even without aid from traditional allies like the US, which is among the country's major sources of official development assistance.

After her post drew mixed reactions from netizens and other members of the showbiz industry, Push sought the opinion of actor Robin Padilla, a staunch supporter of Duterte on the matter: "Lahat naman tayo ay may opinyon dahil tayo ay nasa malayang bansa."

Padilla added: "Sabi nga ni Mayor Duterte mismo, si Mayor mismo nagsalita na that is our right and he will protect our right. Siya ang nagsabi noon na karapatan natin. Ngayon ang ano lang diyan ay ang dami-daming problema ng bansa. Huwag na tayo mag-away-away. 'Yung opinyon niya, opinyon niya iyon."

On Tuesday, Duterte reacted to Isidro's post. "May nagalit na isang artista sa akin, psychopath daw ako," he said during the oath-taking of new officials in Malacanang. "I leave her to her Constitutional right to free expression. She should enjoy that."

Actress Agot Isidro drew mixed reactions from netizens after she criticized President Rodrigo Duterte for his latest tirades against the European Union and the United States.

Last Thursday, Duterte said he would rather die of hunger than accept aid from superpowers that wish to meddle in his war against illegal drugs.

Duterte said Philippines "will survive" even sans aid from traditional allies, the US and EU, which are among the country's major sources of official development assistance.

In a Facebook post on Friday that has since become viral, Isidro called Duterte a "psychopath." “Unang-una, walang umaaway sa iyo. As a matter of fact, ikaw ang nang-aaway. Pangalawa, yung bansa Kung saan ka inuluklok ng 16 million out of 100+ million people ay Third World. Kung makapagsalita ka parang superpower and pilipinas eh. At excuse me, ayaw namin magutom. Mag-isa ka na Lang. wag kang mandamay. Hindi na nga nakakain ang nakararami, gugutumin mo pa lalo,” she wrote.

Isidro also wrote: “May kilala along psychiatrist. Patingin ka. Hindi ka bipolar. You are a psychopath.”

Isidro’s post made it to the list of local trending topics on Twitter.

While some netizens supported Isidro for voicing out her opinion, others lambasted the actress because of her post.

Even actress Elizabeth Oropesa seemed to be reacting to Isidro’s post on Sunday, when she posted a picture of her wearing a pro-Duterte shirt, writing in the caption: “One of the 16 million psycopaths.”

Meanwhile, according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said that while the actress was entitled to her own opinion, “we need to really hear what the President is calling Filipinos to do, which is be free from dependence on foreign aid, which is what the lady is fearful we will lose.”
