Industry experts to mentor stop motion animation course

The School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPaCE) at the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) offers a Master Class in Stop Motion Animation to be held on four consecutive Saturdays during the end of June and the beginning of July.

The School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPaCE) at the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) offers a Master Class in Stop Motion Animation to be held on four consecutive Saturdays during the end of June and the beginning of July.

Lessons include animation principles, story ideas, basic film terms, storyboard, composition, and lighting. Hands-on activities such as wire armature-making, walk cycle exercise, and editing animation will also be conducted. 

The module aims to give a broader knowledge on stop motion animation with a comprehensive introduction on the craft and its techniques: object, clay, and pixilation. Students will likewise be immersed into the basic workflow of the production pipeline.

Participants will likewise obtain an in-depth training on the needed software such as Dragonframe, Stop Motion Studio, and Handbrake. By the end of the course, the attendees will be encouraged to create a one-minute project.

The program will be facilitated by award-winning artists Ricky Orellana, director, animator, film editor, sound recordist, and art director on short and feature films and documentaries; and John Paul Bonoan, animator, storyboard artist, and video editor on short and web series. 

Orellana’s long stretch of accomplishments include his representative work Sa Maynila, which garnered the Best Documentary award at the 3rd Gawad CCP para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video in 1989 and Best Student Film Documentary at the 8th FAP Student Motion Picture Awards in 1990. 

He is now a board member of the Animation Council of the Philippines (ACPI) and the Samahan ng Filipinong Arkivista para sa Pelikula (SOFIA) and the Audiovisual Archive Head at MOWELFUND. He is currently teaching Experimental Animation and Scriptwriting for Animation at DLS-CSB. He likewise directed documentary films on Philippine National Artists Arturo Rogerio Luz and Maestro Lucio San Pedro. 

Bonoan’s experimental film The Ditch bagged the Best Animated Short Film Student Category Award and Best Technical Excellence in Animahenasyon 2013. Bonoan likewise received the Best Animation by Alumnus award at Benilde Animation Festival 2016.

He has worked as a stop motion animator under the production of Indie Pop Films for LEGO: The Build Zone web series, as shown on the official YouTube channel of the brand. He is currently teaching Experimental Animation and Flash Animation at DLS-CSB. 

The four sessions will be on June 23, 30, July 7 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.. 

Fee of the entire program is P17,400.
