Filipinos from Morocco seek assistance

The Moroccan Ministry of Health confirmed on Wednesday 237 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases to 3,446 in the country.

The Moroccan Ministry of Health confirmed on Wednesday 237 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases to 3,446 in the country.

The ministry said 149 deaths from COVID-19 were reported while 417 patients have recovered in total.

The regions with the largest number of cases are Casablanca with 917, and Marrakech with 742.

Last April 18, Morocco extended the state of medical emergency until May 20 in an effort to strengthen preventive measures to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus.

There are about 3,000 Filipinos in the country. "What is happening in Morocco is a part of a broader pattern," said Nisha Varia, senior researcher at the women's division at Human Rights Watch.

Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are in ‘No Work, No Pay’ status may now submit their application for cash assistance.

The program is part of the national government’s response to the impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak.

Concerned OFWs may submit their application online to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and to all Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLO) abroad to avail for the program spearheaded by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) under its Abot Kamay ang Pagtulong (AKAP) Program.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Monday assured Filipino workers affected by restrictions caused by COVID-19 infections that the government is ready to extend assistance especially with the recent travel bans in the Middles East as well as retrenchments of local businesses.

“Any Filipino for that matter. Maski saan. Wherever he may be. And if he wants to go home here, to his country, we are duty bound to bring him back to the Philippines,” President Duterte said during the Interagency Task Force (IATF) on COVID-19 briefing in Malacanang.
