Could this sway the race? On the final day of special election campaigning for Montana’s seat in Congress, Republican candidate Greg Gianforte has been charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedy “body slamming” a journalist in front of witnesses.

Gianforte’s campaign accused Guardian journalist Ben Jacobs of “aggressive behavior,” but other witnesses and an audio recording back up Jacobs’ account. Now Gianforte could pay a fine or spend six months behind bars, but with half of Montana’s voters having cast their ballots early, the incident might not be enough to hand victory to Democratic candidate Rob Quist.
