‘Godzilla: Resurgence’ is coming to theaters at end of August

The king of all monsters is back in Godzilla: R

esurgence and brings the audience back to Godzilla’s origins as he emerges in modern Japan for the first time.

Godzilla: Resurgence is a Japanese tokusatsu kaiju film, a live action science fiction monster movie featuring special effects. It is the 29th Godzilla film produced by Toho and the 31st in the franchise.

The film is co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, and stars Hiroki Hasegawa, Satomi Ishihara, and Yutaka Takenouchi. Both directors performed double duties as writer and visual effects director respectively.

Higuchi most recently directed the live action film adaption of Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) which was released in 2015. Here's what Mike DuBoise, EVP and COO of Funimation had to say in his statement.

Toho last released Godzilla: Final Wars back in 2004, and licensed the rights to Godzilla to Warner Bros. for director Gareth Edwards' remake, which earned $525 million worldwide, $26 million of which came from Japanese markets.

Given the renewed interest in the Godzilla franchise, Toho decided to produce another Godzilla project, and Godzilla: Resurgence was born.

Produced by Toho, Godzilla: Resurgence as reported by Box Office Mojo, debuted at no.1 in Japan on its opening weekend earning an impressive $6,122,434.00 across 441 screens.

The monster movie stomps into action when an unknown accident occurs in modern-day Japan, at Tokyo Bay’s Aqua Line. All of the sudden, a giant creature immediately appears, destroying town after town with its landing reaching the capital.

Godzilla: Resurgence opens Aug. 31 in cinemas from Pioneer Films.
