Glen Ong, a Chinese/Filipino businessman who is a major importer of food products from the Philippines, was invited by the management of Foody World, a major supermarket chain that started in Toronto and now opening its doors in Western Canada, to do a cooking demonstration of his product – Pinoy Delight brand Sweet ‘n Juicy hotdogs.

Glen and his assistants Dorothy Delos Reyes and Carol Abellano, both Filipinos, did the demo on November 12 and 13 at Foody World Richmond BC, between 12 noon and 5 pm.

Customers of the supermarket had fun listening to the sales pitch from Glen giving instructions on the different ways to cook the hotdogs.

“The Filipino way is to fry the hotdogs using a small amount of virgin olive oil for few minutes and to pour the broth included in the package for that sweet and salty flavor. Of course, you eat it with rice! You can also add the hotdogs on spaghetti. In Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and China, you may add the cocktail size hotdogs to your hot pot dishes. Just add the hotdogs with other ingredients to the stew simmering in a metal pot at the center of the dining table,” says Glen, to the amusement of the listeners, who were mostly Chinese. Good thing Glen knows some Mandarin. But, language did not matter as soon as the customers got to taste and sample the hotdogs at the demo, they were all convinced and won over.

Glen also adds that the Pinoy Delight brand hotdog comes in a three different packages which he describes as: cocktail - children, regular - Mama and jumbo - Daddy.

“I notice that the ladies almost always choose the jumbo, so I conclude that size really matters to women,” he says jokingly.

The hotdogs are made in Canada from chicken breast with its casing made from pork. The rest of the ingredients are imported from the Philippines.

The demo at the upscale store was very successful, which made Filipino/Canadian businessman Dino wonder how Glen was able to showcase his Philippine product in a place where majority of customers are Chinese. Ms. Fang Guo, a supervisor at the Accounting department of Foody World’s who welcomed Glen and his group, tasted the hotdogs and liked them!

“I would like to see more Filipino product offerings and more Filipino customers visiting the store and buying their groceries at Foody World,” says Ms. Fang.

The hotdogs are now available in many Filipino stores and major supermarkets such as T & T, Overwaitea supermarket chains - Save on Foods, Overwaitea foods and PriceMart foods.
