“Open minded ka ba?” Daiana Menezes on HIV

“It takes an open mind to minimize, if not eliminate, the stigma that comes with the topic HIV,” says Brazilian actress, model, and TV host Daiana Menezes. Eight years ago, she was invited by conceptual photographer Niccolo Cosme to be part of his advocacy. Niccolo started the Red Whistle, a nonprofit organization and a collaborative platform for people to come together and show their support for those living with HIV and AIDS. It is also an agent and partner for brands to show their support to HIV and AIDS advocacy.

“It takes an open mind to minimize, if not eliminate, the stigma that comes with the topic HIV,” says Brazilian actress, model, and TV host Daiana Menezes. “Aside from bringing awareness on social media, which we do often as artists using our social influence, we have different events and talks open to the public, letting the word out that there is really a way to start the awareness and stop the stigma,” adds the “Brazilipina,” who is also a graduate of the New York Film Academy.

Daiana was alarmed at the rising statistics of HIV/AIDS in the Philippines. According to Daiana’s research, there was one case of HIV-AIDS every day in 2008, four cases in 2010, nine in 2012, 17 in 2014, and this 2018, it’s 32 per day.

“And these are the ones who happen to find out, what about the ones who never even got tested and are carrying HIV and spreading it due to the lack of awareness or enough information/ education?” asks Daiana.

“HIV/AIDS is an example of one of the most destructive global pandemics in history. I am campaigning for awareness, prevention, and information, and for the ones who tested positive on how to get their free treatment. Treatment is free, and you can live a pretty decent quality life if you know your status and treatment,” explains Daiana.

Daiana works with advocates who aim to empower and inspire people to come together and help each other in the battle against HIV and AIDS. Using pop culture as a way to change mindsets, Daiana and other advocates hope to start discussions among the youth so that they will sound the alarm and spread the word that HIV is here and that it must be stopped.

The Red Whistle wants to contribute towards increasing HIV awareness among the youth and encourage community action. They want the Filipinos to be well informed on the ways of preventing and spreading it, and for them to learn that the treatment is free. They also aim to elp improve access to HIV services, including HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and support; and promote a culture of sex positivity to create an enabling environment for an effective HIV response.

“I want people to open their minds and no more stigma. Right now, there’s still a lot of fear and stigma, but we are getting there, and we need your help” ends Daiana.
