Tacloban City Mayor Cristina G. Romualdez called women “heroes” in her speech during the Women’s Month Congress on March 20 at Robinsons North.

“I salute their contribution in development,” said the Mayor, “To me they are heroes, holding their family together and rearing children 24/7 to become better persons is no joke. As mothers and housewives, they pour out their love and compassion without expecting anything in return.”

Romualdez, a staunch advocate of women empowerment and causes, commended women’s role in development and shared how Tacloban protects and cares for its women.

Mayor Cristina has supported and encouraged the creation of women’s organizations such as the Tacloban City Council of Women (TCCW) which assists Local Government Units (LGUs) in addressing concerns affecting women. TCCW was formed after President Rodrigo Duterte issued an Executive Order to all LGUs to create a women’s council.

TCCW Chair Rebecca Ada said that the TCCW is composed of 19 women organizations from various sectors of the city. The council has launched advocacy campaigns on Violence Against Women and Girls, Teenage Marriage and Early Pregnancy, Anti-AIDS, Anti-Bullying, Anti-Trafficking.

Mayor Romualdez also established the only Women Shelter in Region 8 at the foot of Kanhuraw Hill that houses violently abused women and children.

The mayor is proud that Tacloban portrays the theme of the 2018 Women’s Month, “We make change work for women.”
