A pilot project to give people struggling under the poverty line a guaranteed salary with no strings attached is currently underway in Ontario and the man behind the idea is in Vancouver today, making the case that it's time for a basic income in B.C. too.

Former Conservative Senator Hugh Segal, a strong advocate for the basic income model, penned the provincial discussion paper that prompted the pilot project in Ontario. He explained to On The Coast host Stephen Quinn why he believes spending is key to saving when it comes to poverty reduction.

The number of plants, animals and lichens facing extinction in Canada is growing, and B.C. is home to 40 per cent of those species.

That's according to a new report from NatureServe Canada, which found 517 species in Canada "globally at risk," which means they're at risk of extinction because they have either a low population, restricted range, face other threats or a combination of these factors.

If you're a Conservative in British Columbia, you'll probably find yourself voting Liberal when the province goes to the polls on May 9. If you're a Liberal, there's a decent chance you'll cast a ballot for the NDP. And if you're a New Democrat, you might be rooting against the only governing New Democrat in the country, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley.

Search and rescuers in Lions Bay B.C. have postponed a search for a group of missing hikers believed to either been hit by a falling cornice or caught up in an avalanche.

A cornice is an overhanging mass of hardened snow at the edge of a mountain precipice.

Around 4 p.m. PT Saturday, Lions Bay Search and Rescue was called to Mt. Harvey, which is north of Lions Bay for the missing hikers and were assisted by North Shore Rescue.
