Residents of a Cowichan Valley neighbourhood just off the Malahat Highway on Vancouver Island have filed a court injunction to stop work on safety improvements on their stretch of the highway.

Bill Eller, a resident of Aspen Road in the Cowichan Valley, says eliminating a left-hand turn connecting his community with the highway to Victoria will increase danger, not reduce it.

After months of consultation and debate, Vancouver city council passed a plan revamping the 10th Avenue corridor between Oak and Cambie Streets. 

The $3-million plan will see a separated and raised bike lane — removing 75 metered parking spaces — but also improved sidewalks, shorter crossings, and an increased number of parking spots for people with disabilities.

Masoud Jahani was "shocked" when he lost a fight to overturn a distracted driving ticket he got for plugging his cell phone into a charger while stopped at a North Vancouver intersection in 2015.

Jahani used his legal training and spent $700 appealing the ticket in B.C. Supreme Court but lost this month, because B.C.'s stringent distracted driving laws allow wide latitude for police to target any driver who touches or looks at a digital device.

The Vancouver Park Board has approved bylaw amendments officially banning new cetaceans at the Vancouver Aquarium. 

Commissioners approved changes to the Parks Control bylaw that would prevent the aquarium from bringing in cetaceans — including narwhals, dolphins, porpoises, killer whales and beluga whales — and bans "a show, performance or other form of entertainment, which includes one or more cetaceans."
