Four years ago, Lukas Whibley, 17, ran back in the house to grab his wallet and yelled to his mom before heading off to Little Qualicum River, where he climbed a rock face and fell to his death.

"Sure it's fun, but think before you jump. It's a split second of your life. Is this really how you want to spend your last few moments?" said Lukas's mother Sally Whibley, who has never returned to the river, especially now with the rushing spring waters' haunting roar.

Mark Stevens was taking part in a routine icebreaker exercise with a fellow UBC law school student when he realized they had an unexpected but significant historical connection. 

It was the first 10 minutes of his first class at the school and Stevens, a descendent of Métis leader Gabriel Dumont, happened to be sitting next to Carly Teillet, the great, great grandniece of Métis leader Louis Riel.

Running Olympian sets new Philippine record for 21K race

Ottawa, Canada – Logging another record-breaking feat, MILO Marathon Queen Mary Joy Tabal has clinched first place in the women’s division of the half marathon category of the Ottawa Race. The elite runner from Cebu not only bested her personal record, she also marked a significant milestone for breaking the Philippine record time for the 21K race. The Ottawa Race slot was Tabal’s grand prize for winning the 40th National MILO Marathon National Finals in Iloilo last 2016.

President Donald Trump's budget proposal would cut federal funding for an earthquake early warning system for California, Oregon and Washington State — a development that seismology experts and some local leaders say would be the end of a project, which also involves a great deal of collaboration and data sharing with Canadian seismologists.

The system being developed in conjunction with various universities is intended at providing critical seconds of warning when an earthquake has started and potentially dangerous shaking is imminent, allowing time for people to take cover and to slow or halt such things as critical industrial processes and transportation systems.

When the leaders of British Columbia's NDP and Green Party stood before the microphones in Victoria on Monday to say they'd reached a deal to join forces, the reverberations were felt clear across the country, on Parliament Hill.

While the deal won't be finalized until later today, it could spell an end to Christy Clark's chances of holding on to power before she can even introduce a throne speech that might take into account the priorities of the province's three Green MLAs, on things like political finance reform, more affordable housing and funding for clean technology.
