CANADIAN-BASED PINOY CALVELO EYES TWO MORE INTERNATIONAL OPEN CHESS

JELVIS Arandela Calvelo, the country’s hottest non-master player, will be seeking two more International Tournament before the year ends.

The Dasmarinas, Cavite native Calvelo tallied 7.0 points on six wins, 2 draws and a loss in 9 outings and settled for 3rd overall in the 2017 Canadian Open Chess Championship (Under 2200 section) at the Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada last July 6 to 16, 2017.

JELVIS Arandela Calvelo, the country’s hottest non-master player, will be seeking two more International Tournament before the year ends.

The Dasmarinas, Cavite native Calvelo tallied 7.0 points on six wins, 2 draws and a loss in 9 outings and settled for 3rd overall in the 2017 Canadian Open Chess Championship (Under 2200 section) at the Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada last July 6 to 16, 2017.

The 38 years-old Toronto, Canada based Calvelo, who work as Aircraft Winder and technician at the Canada International Aviation Inc., is schedule to play in the upcoming Mayor's Cup International Open Chess Championship on November 11 and 12 in Buffalo, New York, USA followed by Mississauga International Open Chess Championship on December 1 to 3, 2017 in Mississauga, Ontario Canada.

He is expected to encounter strong opposition in his upcoming tournaments.

“It is part of my learning experience. I have to learn how to beat stronger players," Calvelo said.

Calvelo reinforced his position as one of the Philippines’ top non-master players when he ruled the Air Tawar Rapid Chess Championship dubbed as Melaka Chess Open in January 25, 2014 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He also finished a tie for first in the Karnival Catur Sepang 2013 and Sepang Rapid Chess Open and KL Open chess in 2014 in Malaysia.-Marlon Bernardino-
