Grandmasters (GMs) Mark Paragua and Darwin Laylo expect rough sailing in the 2nd Marinduque Online Chess Tournament where they will be meeting a tough line of competitors on October 30, 2020, Friday at 7pm at lichess.org.


The one-day blitz event (5 minutes time control format), backed by Marcopper High School Batch 86 headed by Mr. Rico Paras of Michigan, USA and Engr. Macario Pelaez of Medina, Misamis, Oriental, offers P3,000 to the champion while the next four chessers will pocket P2,000, P1,000, P700 and P500, respectively. The sixth to tenth-placer will settle for P300 each.
There will be a P500 cash prizes each for the category winners, Top Executive (PECA Member), Top Kiddie (12 years old and below), Top Junior (18 years old and below), Top Senior (60 years old and above), Top Lady, Top Marinduqueno and Top Marinduquena.
"We do this to promote chess in the grass roots level and to discover future chess talents from Marinduque," said PECA President Dr. Fred Paez, who spearheaded the online competition along with Marinduque Chess Association.
Other Filipinos joining the competition are Fide Master Alekhine Nouri, National Master Elwin Retanal, Ellan Asuela, Johann Cedrick Gaddi, Gary Abano, Tino Laurio, Leo Rabulan and defending champion Sherwin Tiu.
