THE SEARCH for the country’s new chess stars begins today (Sunday, September 1) when the IM Joel Banawa Chess Cup (kiddies and juniors division) in memory of the late IM Rolly Martinez gets going at the Open Kitchen, Rockwell Business Center-Sheridan, Highwayhills, Greenfields District in Mandaluyong City.

Tournament registration start at 8:00 am to 10:45 am followed by simple opening rites with no less than 13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. will do the traditional ceremonial moves along with National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) director Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe and Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) president Dr. Jenny Mayor.

The format is seven-round Swiss System with time control of 20 minutes plus five seconds delay mode being held to honor the late IM Rolly Martinez and backed up by Ms. China Aurelio and Ms. Mimi Casas of Open Kitchen, Phoenix Chess Academy, Mr. Danilo Ebao of Three Knights Printing Services, ChiliJuan, Mr. Arturo Turbanada, Mr. Jeffrey Dimalanta, Mr.Rosulo Cabusora Jr. Mr. Anthony Ramos, Mega C, Ripples Daily, PTV Sports, Ms. Emz Forrosuelo of Otsuka-Solar Philippines Inc. (Pocari Sweat) and Dreamworks Worldwide (Core of Dreams) Chairman of the board Ms. Lyne Ramos.

The champion in the kiddies 14 years old and below and the juniors ages 15 to 20 division will receive P5,000 each plus trophies, medals and a Brand New Leap Digital chess clock.
