Pattaya, Thailand---General Trias City Chess Club kids Philippine team headed by Relghie Columna, Bonjoure Fille Suyamin, Jirah Floravie Cutiyog and Geraldine Mae Camarines had another fruitful campaign this year, winning the 1st Thailand Chess Festival 2019 Junior Team (4 Players) Rapid Competition held from July 7 and 8, 2019 here at the Le Bali Resort and Spa in Pattaya, Thailand.

Columna, Suyamin, Cutiyog and Camarines combined their forces to beat SJKT Ladang, Malaysia squad led by Kaviyashri Ramachanturan, N.Sangelapten, Soorya Elangovan and Darrshan Elangovan, 4-0, in the final round.

General Trias City Chess Club kids Philippine team scored 16 match points and 27.5 game points followed by runner-up Checkmate (Thailand) with 16 match points and 27.0 game points and ABC (Mongolia) with 8 match points and 11.0 game points for third.

The Dark Knight of Anglo (Thailand) tallied 6.0 match points and 8.5 points game points for fourth while SJKT Ladang (Malaysia) notch 4.0 match points and 6.0 game points for fifth.

“General Trias City Chess Club is up to honing the chess skills of our players to uplift the standard of the game of kings and become champions in international competitions,” said PH chess coach Ederwin Estavillo who is also the president of General Trias City Chess Club.

“Our young chess wizards made us proud today, but I hope the claps and cheers for them in the future would come from Filipinos they’ve helped improved lives through their outstanding mathematical abilities,” said PH head of the delegation Ms. Baby Lyn Kempiz of City Mayor’s Office of General Trias City, Cavite.

“Youth team members are all from General Trias, Cavite and members of General Trias City Chess Club.” she added.

Ms. Kempiz lauded the Team for enthusiastically maintaining a strong presence for the country in global chess competitions.

They are supported by local government of General Trias City, Cavite led by Mayor Antonio “Ony” Ferrer, Congressman Luis “Jon-jon” Ferrer, Vice Mayor Maurito "Morit" Sison, Board Member Kerby Javier Salazar and Del Rosario Christian Institute Foundation, Inc.chairman/president Arnel Beltran Del Rosario.

This delegation is endorsed by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines thru NCFP Executive Director FA Red Dumuk and backed up by the Philippine Sports Commission.

Other members of the young Philippine chess squad are Yanie Ayesha Estavillo (U-8), Noreen Sciecky Atienza (U-8), John Martin Firmalino (U-12), Janmyl Dilan Tisado (U-14), Josh Edmar Castro (U-14), Paolo Estavillo (U-16), Jireh Dan Jaime Cutiyog (U-16) and Stephen Von Estavillo (U-18).

It shall be recalled that Philippines won four gold medals and two silver medals at the Thailand Pattaya Youth Chess Championship 2018 held in Bay Beach Resort Pattaya, Banglamung, Chin Buried in Pattaya, Thailand last October 20 to 24, 2018.-Marlon Bernardino-
