Cebuana Vic Glysen Derotas earns outright WIM title, PH wins 8 golds in Myanmar Asean chess meet

PH chess sensation Vic Glysen Derotas II beat Nina Tuorila of Thailand in the ninth and final round Sunday to gain an outright Woman International Master title in the 20th Asean + Age Group Chess Championships 2019 at the Golden Mandalay Hotel and Hotel Hazel in Mandalay City, Myanmar.

The Cebu City native Derotas, playing under the banner of Nazareth School of National University team manager Samson Go and head coach United States chess master Jose "Jojo" Aquino Jr., wound up with 7.5 points to win the Under-18 girls' division.

Eric Labog Jr. who hails from Solano, Nueva Vizcaya Jr. bested Dang Anh Quoc of Vietnam to rules the Under-18 boys' division. He secure an outright International Master title after tallying 6.5 points for his effort.

It shall be recalled that Derotas dominated the Philippine Junior field enroute for an outright Woman National Master title last June at the Activity Hall, Second Floor Alphaland Makati Place in Malugay Street, Makati City.

Labog, one of the member of the star-studded players of national coach International Master Roel Abelgas, on his part spearheaded University of Perpetual Help into historic first championship in the NCAA Season 94 juniors chess tournament last September at the Malayan High School in Manila.

Mark Jay Bacojo of Dasmarinas City, Cavite pocketed the outright Fide Master title after winning the boys under-14 categoy pushing the Philippines' golden haul to 8 after Mecel Angela Gadut of Candon City, Ilocos Sur, Daren dela Cruz of Dasmarinas City, Cavite, Woman Fide Master Michelle Yaon of Calamba City, Laguna, National Master Alexander Milagrosa of Tagbilaran, Bohol and National Master Cesar Caturla of Surigao del Sur topped the Under-10 girls, Under-12 girls, Women Under-30, Seniors 50 and 65 years old and above, respectively.

Other Filipino individual medallist in the Standard competition are IM John Marvin Miciano of Davao City (silver, U20), National Master Edmundo Gatus of Tondo, Manila (silver, senior 50), Christian Mark Daluz of Sorsogon (silver, U18), FM Stephen Rome Pangilinan of Pandacan, Manila (silver, U18), Clyde Harris Saraos of Cagayan de Oro City (silver,U16), WFM Allaney Jia Doroy of Surigao del Sur (silver,G20) WNM Francois Marie Magpily of Makati City (silver,G18), Mhage Gerriahlou Sebastian of Kalinga, Apayao (silver, G14)and Zhaoyu Capilitan of Cagayan de Oro City (bronze,G8).-Marlon Bernardino-
