PH chess wizard Gio Troy Ventura is setting his sights in competing National Age Group Chess Championships-Luzon Qualifying Leg II to be held on March 28 to 30 at the Robinson Place, Pala Pala in Dasmariñas City, Cavite following his successful conquest of the recent 2019 Batang Pinoy in Ilagan City, Isabela.
Ventura who is schedule to celebrate his 12th birthday on April 8 is the prize fighter of Dasmariñas Chess Academy put up by Dasmariñas City mayor Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. and national coach International Master Roel Abelgas who won two gold in the 2019 Batang Pinoy-Luzon Leg was held recently in Ilagan City, Isabela last March 18 to 22.
After a sorry lost in the opening round against Carl Ephraim Pagulayan of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, Ventura clustered six straight wins in as many rounds to topped the Boys 12 and under Rapid competition of the 2019 Batang Pinoy. He beat fellow five pointers Gladimir Chester Romero of Tanauan, Batangas in the tie break points to enroute the Standard crown.
The Grade six pupil of the Francisco E. Barzaga Memorial School, Dasmariñas City, is currently on a roll since winning the Under 12 division of the Thailand Pattaya Youth Chess Championship 2018 held at the Bay Beach Resort Pattaya, Banglamung, Chin Buried in Pattaya, Thailand last October.
His other 2019 accomplishments include team champion in the Southern Tagalog Calabarzon Athletic Association (STACAA) Chess Tournament-Elementary Division held at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex, Santa Rosa City, Laguna last February 11 to 15. His team mate for Cavite is Jerome Adrian Aragones of Bacoor who won the individual division. Ventura also won the Under 12 division of the Standard competition of National Age Group Chess Championships-Luzon Qualifying Leg I held in Legaspi City, Albay last March 8 to 11.
Meanwhile, Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, tournament organizer of the National Age Group Chess Championships-Luzon Qualifying Leg II to be held on March 28 to 30 at the Robinson Place, Pala Pala in Dasmariñas City, Cavite had something to say.
"Thank you Sir Mayor (Elpidio) Barzaga for hosting this National event. Indeed, you did help our young talented players and Philippine Chess as well,"said GM Gonzales, the coach of country's lone female Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna and International Master Marvin Miciano.
"We want to give an opportunity for talented kids to further hone their skills and make a name for themselves and for our country in the world of chess," said Dasmariñas City mayor Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. for hosting the National Age Group Chess Championships-Luzon Qualifying Leg II.
