Tarrasch Knight Chess Club (Guadalupe Mall) top player Sherwin Tiu defeated former solo leader International Master Angelo Young, 1.5-0.5, in the final round to win the recent Fide Master Camilo Pangan Birthday Chess Invitational Tournament held at the Panciteria ni Tess, (Old Bus Terminal) Lane 12 at the Araneta Center in Cubao Quezon City in front of the Shopwise Mall and close to Ali Mall last Sunday, January 13, 2019.

Young, an eight-time Illinois USA champion, half point ahead after penultimate round yielded to Tiu in their top board encounter in the final canto.

With the win, Tiu tallied 12.5 points and pocketed P1,000 top purse for his effort in the one-day event supported by US based Fide Master Camilo Pangan who celebrate his 60th birthday hosted by Tess Caubat.

Young, on the other hand, join International Master Chris Ramayrat and Recarte Tiauson in a three-way tie for second at 12.0 points in the five minutes play to finish time control format.

National Master and United States chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. failed to catch up with Tiu for the title end up his game into an 1-all deadlock against seven-times Philippine executive champion Dr. Jenny Mayor.

After beating Mayor in their first match, Bernardino took a one pawn up in the opening in their second match but Mayor played superb in the middle game with a brilliant sacrifice his knight forcing Bernardino to resign in their Closed Sicilian skimirsh.

Thus, Bernardino finished overall 5th place with 11.5 points.

Former Asian junior Champion International Master Ricky De Guzman forced a 1-all standoff to United States chess master Jose "Jojo" Aquino and finished at 6th place with 11.0 points.

Interestingly tied for 7th to 8th place are lone female entry Woman Fide Master Allaney Jia Doroy and PH chess wizard 14 years old Jasper Concepcion Faeldonia who totes 10.5 points.Faeldonia is fresh from a Co-Champion in the 35th Singapore National Age Group Chess Championships Boys 14 and under recently in Singapore.

9th to 12th place with 10 points each are Mayor, National Master Efren Bagamasbad, Salvador "Bobby" Dela Paz and Noel Jay "Super B" Estacio.

13th to 14th place with 9.5 points each are Aquino and National Master Edgardo Garma.

15th place with 8.5 points is National Master Romeo Alcodia.

16th to 17th place with 8 points each are National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) director Marrtin "Binky" Gaticales and Eduardo Campos Jr.

18th place is Jude Ulanday with 7.5 points.

19th to 20th place with 7 points each are Ferdinand Paet and Edgar "Bote" Bautista.

21st place is Pangan with 6.5 points while 22nd place is American Ron Logan with 2 points.-Marlon Bernardino-
