LAWYER Cliburn Anthony Orbe of Alphaland Corporation sealed a place in the Round-of-16 of the 2018 Alphaland National Executive Chess Championships Grand Finals, Rapid chess competition of the organizing Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) after posting back-to-back wins late Saturday.

Orbe will face off with Stephen Manzanero of Novaliches Novelty Chess Club being held at the Activity Hall, 2nd Floor, Alphaland Makati Place, Ayala Avenue corner Malugay Street in Makati City.

Orbe, the over-all PECA grand prix topnotcher blasted engineer Novo Tuazon, 2-0, in the Round-of-32. He bested La Salle Coach Susan Grace Neri, 2-0, in the Round-of-64.

Manzanero, meantime trounced Ali Guya in the Round-of-32. He beat Orlando Pascual in the Round-of-64.

The tournament champion will receive the top prize of P50,000 and will be awarded National Master (NM) title in Rapid event according to Chess Arbiter Union of the Philippines (CAUP) president Red Dumuk, who is also the executive director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines in the event supervised by National Arbiters Alexander "Alex" Dinoy, Alfredo Chay and Christian Javier.

Other executive pawnpushers advance to the Round-of-16 are Clark Dela Torre, who brought down Erwin Calar and Joselito Cada, respectively; Narquingel Reyes winner over Zomer Amir and engineer Angel Tambong; Eduard Sumergido who crushed lawyer Jose Aspiras and National Master Francis Jocson; Wilhelm Ardiente who dealt National Master Allan Sasot and Allen Gandia; Professor Rey Reyes who toppled Felix Aguilera and banker Emmanuel Asi and Pagcor bet engineer Ravel Canlas who edged Pampanga Top Real Estate Broker Mark Anthony Yabut and John Franz De Asis.

Other woodpushers who made it to the Round-of-16 are Dandel Fernandez of Maynilad, lawyer Bob Jones Liwagon of the Philippine Army; Ervil Villa, engineer Archie Bayangat, former Barangay chairman and sports writer Jaime Frias, Norman Montejo, Lyndon Sombilon and Adrian Orozco.-Marlon Bernardino-
