MANILA---National Master Mark Jay "MJ" Bacojo emerged victorious in the Sen.Koko Pimentel Thanksgiving Chess championship virtually held online at Lichess Platform Thursday, January 20, 2022.
Bacojo finished with 8 wins, 1 loss for a total of 8 points, the same output of National Master Ronald Llavanes and International Master Michael Concio Jr.
The 15 year old Bacojo, a Grade 10 pupil of Dasmariñas Integrated High School, however, was proclaimed champion due to better tie break points.
Bacojo won the champion’s purse amounting to P8,000 while claiming the title as the fastest Filipino chesser today after topping the Nine Round Swiss System, five minutes plus three seconds increment time control format being held to celebrate the 58th birthday of Sen.Koko Pimentel, a former top player of Cagayan de Oro City chess team.
Llavanes, one of the top players of Philippine Airforce chess team, on the other hand pocketed the runner-up prize of P4,000 while Concio, another pride of Dasmarinas, Cavite chess team receive the third prize worth of P3,000.
Bacojo lost his final match to Concio while Llavanes bested International Master Richelieu Salcedo III.
At 4th to 10th place who got P1,000 each were fourth Grandmaster Darwin Laylo (7.5 pts.), fifth Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. (7.5 pts.), sixth International Master Ronald Dableo (7.5 pts.), seventh National Master Henry Roger Lopez (7 pts.), eight National Master Rolly Parondo Jr. (7 pts.), ninth Vince Duane Pascual (7 pts.) and tenth Narquingel Reyes (7 pts.).
Chief Arbiter is International Arbiter and National Master Elias Lao Jr., assisted by Deputy Arbiter NA Salvador "Boyet" Tardecilla and arbiters NA Dioniver "Bobot" Medrano, NA Cesar Calopez and CA Jonathan Anonuevo.-Marlon Bernardino-
