Manila, Philippines---Philippine chess wizard Ivan Travis Cu of San Juan City pocketed the top honors in the 92nd Brainy Chess Academy-BCA Kiddies Under 13 category held at lichess.org.last Thursday, November 12, 2020.
The 11-year-old Cu, a grade six pupil of Xavier School under the guidance of coach Rolly Yutuc collected six points on six wins and one loss to win the seven-round tournament using seven minutes plus two seconds increment time control format.
Cu scored victories over Hashsya Nawwaarah binti Mohd Faris of Malaysia in the first round, Dwight De Guzman of Mandaluyong City in the second round, Hans Lee Villorente of Pandan, Antique in teh fourth round, Gabriel Ryan Paradero of in the fifth round, Cassey Miguel Tabamo of El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental in the sixth round and Kate Nicole Ordizo of Alaminos, Pangasinan in the seventh and final round.
Cu yielded to Joemel Narzabal of Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte in the third round.
"I'm very happy with the victory," said Cu, who is best to remember beating Oscar Gao (elo 1595) of Australia in the eight and final round to finish second place in the Boys 10 and under in the 36th Singapore National Age Group Chess Championships held at the Expo MAX Atria last December 27–30, 2019. Cu who amassed seven wins and one loss got a total performance of 1622 for his effort.
