Demetrius Andrade WON’T be fighting WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders next, says his promoter Eddie Hearn. Hearn is adament that Andrade MUST fight one of these guys in his next match:

 Canelo Alvarez
Gennadiy Golovkin
Jermall Charlo
Jaime Munguia
It looks like a pipe dream on Hearn’s part in him thinking that one of those guys will agree to fight Andrade. Unfortunately, Eddie doesn’t say who the back-up plan will be if Andrade fails to get of those name guys to fight him, but it’ll likely be another domestic level contender.

The Matchroom boss wants Saunders to sit and wait to see if he lands the May 2nd fight against Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas, Nevada. Saunders (29-0, 14 KOs) is one of three fighters that are on Canelo’s shortlist for his next fight in May.

WBO middleweight champion Andrade (29-0, 18 KOs) called out Saunders, 30, after stopping #3 WBO Luke Keeler (17-3-1, 5 KOs) in the 9th last Thursday night on DAZN at the Meridian at Island Gardens, in Miami.

After the fight, Andrade said he was going to be moving up to 168 to challenge Saunders for his WBO super middleweight title in his next fight. But Andrade should have spoken to Hearn first before he wasted his time in the spotlight in calling out Saunders, because he’s not going to make that fight. Andrade should have used the spotlight to callum out Jaime Munguia, Gennadiy Golovkin, Canelo or Jermall Charlo.

Hearn not interested in Andrade vs. Saunders fight
“In the second round, I don’t know how he got up? That was a heavy knockdown,” said Hearn to Fino Boxing on Keeler getting up after being dropped hard by Andrade. “That was a huge left hand [from Anrade]. He went down, and his head actually fell against the ropes.

“Luke Keeler showed a lot of heart,” said Hearn. “I’m glad for Demetrius that he got the stoppage, because his last few fights, he’s beaten everyone up, he’s won every round. It was good to get a stoppage victory tonight. For me, I’d like to see him unify at 160,” said Hearn on Andrade. “I feel like he has unfinished business there, but he does have the ability to move to 168.

“He wants to fight Billy Joe Saunders,” said Hearn on Andrade. “I think the fight with Jaime Munguia is a great fight, and I think the fight with Charlo is a great fight, and Canelo, GGG, all these people. I want to see him in one of those types of fights. He’s not an easy style to fight, and no one wants to fight him. Everyone in boxing knows how good he is. So I’ve got to keep trying and make those fights,” said Hearn.

Hearn will then go ahead and put together the All British Smith-Saunders fight, likely in Liverpool. Callum (27-0, 19 KOs) holds the WBA Super World super middleweight title.

Demetrius wouldn’t fight reckless against Canelo or GGG
“Tonight was a performance where he was really wreckless. I don’t think he would do that against Canelo or GGG,” said Hearn to secondsout on Andrade’s win over Keeler. “I think he knows that people were saying, ‘Come on, knock people out.’ How Luke Keeler got up in the second round knockdown, in which he was flat on his back and his head on the ropes, and eventually he stopped him in the 9th round.

“I’m pleased that he did, because he wins every round against everybody,” said Hearn in raving about Andrade’s execution. “But let’s see this recklessness. People want to see knockouts, and I’m glad he got the stoppage,” said Hearn in expressing happiness at seeing Andrade score a knockout.

Another reason why Hearn doesn’t want to match Andrade against Saunders is because he wants to make a unification match between Callum Smith and Billy Joe. Callum is the Plan-B option that Hearn has for Saunders if he fails to get the Canelo fight next.

Andrade looked sloppy, tentative and one-paced in his win over 32-year-old Keeler. The 31-year-old Rhode Island native’s work rate was low, and he looked tired. On top of that, Andrade’s long hair was flopping all around and ending up in his face to obscure his vision.

Andrade should have gotten it cut before the fight. Against a low level fighter like Keeler, Andrade was able to get away with his hair falling into his face all night. Against a good fighter, it could result in him getting knocked out.

Hearn doesn’t have to worry about Andrade fighting Canelo or GGG, because he’s not on their radar. He may never get a chance to fight either of those stars, and Hearn should have known that. Andrade has nothing to offer Canelo and Golovkin.

Saunders waiting on Canelo fight, won’t fight Andrade
“There are so many different outcomes right now,” said Hearn when asked if he’s planning on matching Andrade against Saunders next. “Billy Joe is waiting to see if he gets the Canelo fight. You know, we got the Callum Smith-Billy Joe unification.

“There are other fights for Demetrius at middleweight against [Jermall] Charlo, Jaime Munguia with DAZN and Golden Boy, Canelo Alvarez and GGG,” Hearn said. “Any of those names are fine for Demetrius’ next one, but it has to be one of them.

“No,” said Hearn when asked if there was any response from Charlo from his offer to him to face Andrade. “I did call him [Jermall] today, ‘Just to let you know, we’ll do it on Fox, no problem.’ They said, ‘No problem, we’ll talk, and see what happens,’ but nothing much. We’re always talking, but I just think that if you’re Charlo, what can they offer Charlo? I don’t know.

“Something other than a voluntary defense that no one really wants to see,” Hearn said about Charlo. “And no one really wants to see Demetrius in another voluntary defense. So let’s make a big fight, a unification, step up a weight, and do something outrageous,” said Hearn.

There’s money to be made in a fight between Callum and Saunders in terms of ticket sales from a stadium fight in Liverpool, as well as pay-per-view buys on Sky Box Office. Unfortunately, Andrade vs. Saunders won’t sell tickets in the UK, and it’s not going to interest British fans to see it on Sky Box Office.
