IBF super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas says he’s now ready to fight WBC 115lb champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai following his 12 round unanimous decision victory over mandatory challenger Jonas Sultan last Saturday night at the Save Mart Arena in Fresno, California.
The boxing world is very interested in seeing Ancajas, 26, mix it up with Rungvisai (45-4-1, 40 KOs), but unfortunately that doesn’t appear to be his management’s plans. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum wants Ancajas (30-1-1, 20 KOs) to face WBA champion Khalid Yafai next.
Arum fancies that fight for some reason rather than putting Ancajas in with Rungvisai so that he can gain more respect from the boxing public. Yafai is not seen as being in the same league as Rungvisai. Yafai is a good fighter, but he’s more of a belt holder level champion rather than a true champion.
“I’m ready now, but it’s up to my manager and promoter,” Ancajas said to Villianfy when asked if he’s ready yet to face WBC super flyweight champion Srisake Rungvisai.
Ancajas didn’t show the kind of ability against Jonas Sultan (14-4, 9 KOs) last weekend that would mke you believe that he’ll be able to cope with the immense punching power of the 31-year-old Rungvisai, who is coming off two big wins over Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez. Rungvisai just finished beating two of the best fighters in the super flyweight division in back to bak fight. Right now, Ancajas doesn’t look like he could beat Estrada or Chocolatito, much less a talented fighter like Rungvisai
It would be great if Bob Arum were willing to take a big risk with Ancajas by making the fight with Rungvisai, but that would be a fight that could end badly for Top Rank and the Filipino fighter. The thing is, if Top Rank wants to make a star out of Ancajas before he becomes irrelevant, then they need to put him in with Rungvisai now.
It’s not going to work putting Ancajas in with more unskilled fighters like we saw last Saturday night. That was a mess of a fight, and it didn’t help Ancajas one bit get ready for a future fight against Rungvisai. If the idea is for Top Rank to wait two years before they make the Rungvisai-Ancajas fight in hopes of aging Rungvisai enough to where Ancajas can beat him, it’s doubtful that it’ll work.
Rungvisai has the kind of punching power and high volume attack that will always give Ancajas problems. Ancajas doesn’t throw a lot of punches because he’s limited I that respect. When Ancajas tried to throw a lot of shots, he gets tired and then needs to rest. He’s not like Manny Pacquiao or other popular fighters like Donnie Nietes, who can throw punches nonstop for 12 rounds without gassing out.
Hopefully, Arum doesn’t want to let the Ancajas-Rungvisai marinate forever, because Ancajas doesn’t have enough talent to hold onto his belt for a long period of time.
