Lightweight champion Mikey Garcia says former four division world champion Adrien ‘The Problem’ Broner shouldn’t have posted the financial offer by Matchroom Boxing USA promoter Eddie Hearn on social media.
Garcia thinks Broner should be respectful to promoters that making offers to him. So instead of getting upset about an offer that he might feel is low, Broner needs understand that his is how negotiating is done. The promoters start low, and the fighter then makes a high offer. Eventually the deal gets done. What Broner appears to have done is have taken the initial offer from Hearn and posted it on social media to embarrass him.
Mikey said this on his Twitter about Broner posting the offer made to him by Eddie Hearn:
“As any businessman and promoter do, they got to try and start a little lower. It’s part of any negotiations. You never do the first offer. They go low. You got to go high and make it happen.”
Ideally, Broner should have his management being the one that’s in contact with Hearn, because he needs that’s skilled at negotiating and level-headed. Hearn posted a response to Broner on Twitter, saying that he doubts whether he knows what an NDA agreement is.
We haven’t heard any additional messages from Broner about Hearn, which could mean that the British promoter have given up trying to sign him. Whether Hearn would have continued to negotiate or not if Broner had merely turned down his initial offer in a polite manner is unknown. Hearn offered Broner $2 million per fight, which is good money for a fighter who is no longer a world champion level fighter.
“I’m not sure AB knows what an NDA is. My phone has gone crazy since he posted the offer,” Hearn said on his Twitter about Broner posting his offer on social media.
With Broner, you never know if he intentionally was messing with Hearn to get attention from his many followers on social media. At this point in Broner’s career, the main thing he has going for him is his wacky personality. His skills are no longer what they once were, so he seems to be making up for it by being crazy to interest the boxing public. The interest in Broner won’t last if he can’t beat the top fighters occasionally, because he’s not getting the job done anymore.
”But Adrien Broner shouldn’t have posted that. I don’t think he should have because it’s not good business. You’ve got to be respectful. You’ve got to keep that confidential. You can say you’re in talks. You can say that you’ve got a proposal, but don’t disclose everything,” Mikey said to ES News Reporting.
Mikey is in talks with Hearn to sign with his Matchroom company. If Hearn can sign Mikey, he would have a fighter that he can turn into a bigger start in the U.S and become a star in the UK. That would be a far better addition for Hearn than it would if he signs Broner.
”I’m sorry Eddie Hearn, you a good guy and all, but you tried to give me a worst deal than Roc Nation offered me. The sh-t is ova #SlaveDeal,” Broner said on his Instagram.
The deal that Hearn offered Broner as follows:
• Fight 1 – $2 million purse for September 2018
• Fight 2 – $2.250 million purse for March 2019
• Fight 3 – $2.500 million purse for September 2019
If Broner doesn’t start winning soon, I don’t know if he’s going to be worth signing by anybody. You can put Broner in with Regis Prograis at 140 and expect him to win, and he’s failed repeatedly at 147. He looks like he’s about done.
