Oscar De La Hoya is already predicting that his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) will be knocking out middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) in their fight in 3 months on September 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is very ambitious of De La Hoya to pick Canelo by a knockout.

Golovkin is going to be very happy in hearing the news that De La Hoya is predicting a knockout win for his young star Canelo. Golovkin wants it to be a brawl because that’s the type of style that he’s comfortable with. Golovkin’s last 2 opponents Danny Jacobs and Kell Brook both used a hit and run style against him, which clearly frustrated him. They both lost to Golovkin, but they were able to make him look bad at times with their mobility.

It’s quite possible that we’ll see Canelo take a page out of the Brook and Jacobs’s playbook by choosing to move around the ring and look to throw pot shots against Golovkin. The element of surprise won’t be there if Canelo chooses to use that style, because Golovkin now knows how to defeat fighters that use movement. He focuses on slowly pursuing them and throwing jabs. Canelo doesn’t have a jab as good as Golovkin’s, so it might not work out well for him if he tries to use movement against him.

A big knockout win for the 27-year-old Canelo over Golovkin would shock the boxing world to its boots. Few fans are expecting Canelo to beat Golovkin by a knockout. Most fans seem to believe Golovkin will win. The fans that are picking Canelo, see him edging Golovkin in a close fight. For Canelo to knock Golovkin out within 10 rounds, it would mean that Canelo would have to take some real risks by standing in the pocket and trading bombs. I don’t think that would be wise for Canelo to do. He might end up like some of Golovkin’s past knockout victims if he does that.

Canelo would be another David Lemieux if he tries to trade with him. Even if Canelo doesn’t trade, he could wind end up as Lemieux 2.0 on September 16.

Hopefully, De La Hoya has been checking things out with Canelo about his knockout prediction over Triple G. De La Hoya and Canelo need to be on the same page when it comes to the risky knockout predictions Oscar is doing on his behalf. The last thing that Canelo needs is for him to have extra weight on his inexperienced shoulders going into a fight against the best fighter in the middleweight division. Canelo has had a lot of fight during his pro career, but only 4 fights against guys that you could call good opposition at the time that he fought them.

GGG has never tasted defeat before since turning pro in 2004. Everybody loses eventually, but it’s not likely that Triple G will be knocked out by Canelo.

De La Hoya is also predicting that Canelo and Golovkin will be fighting a trilogy in facing each other 3 times. If Canelo gets knocked out in the 1st round by GGG on September 16, it would be crazy for them to fight each again. Another knockout loss for Canelo would be disastrous for his career. I doubt that Golden Boy would even take that risk.

”It’s Canelo’s era, and we feel very confident that our guy Canelo Alvarez is going to show up in the best shape and with confidence,” said De La Hoya to ES News Reporting about the Canelo-Golovkin fight. “Look, I’m calling knockout within 10 rounds. This is the fight everyone wants to see, and that they’ve been wanting to see for the last year and a half,” said De La Hoya.

Canelo would be on his way to becoming the huge crossover star that De La Hoya was if he can take Golovkin’s scalp. That’s the kind of victory that Canelo needs for him to become a mega-star in the boxing world. The guys that Canelo has been fighting in recent years haven’t been good enough for him to get much of a bounce after beating them. Canelo beat Miguel Cotto in 2015, but it wasn’t a prime Cotto.

The fight also lacked any real drama, as Canelo fought in a plodding manner in fighting at a slow pace. It wasn’t drama-filled like Cotto’s loss to Antonio Margarito in 2008. That was a thrilling fight. Canelo-Cotto was not thrilling. It was just a big guy in Canelo beating up a smaller fighter in a slow-paced fight. Canelo rarely threw any sustained combinations.

In the fights that Canelo has knocked guys out, he’s usually had to hit them with a high number of big shots in a row. The exception that rule was in his bouts against James Kirkland and Amir Khan. Those fighters are not known for having stiff punch resistance. Khan is a welterweight with a history of being knocked out at lightweight and light welterweight.

Despite having a lot of knockouts on his resume, Canelo isn’t really knockout artist or even close to being that type of fighter. In Canelo’s last 8 fights, he’s been forced to go the distance 4 times. Canelo has failed to get knockouts in 4 of those fights. The guys that Canelo did knockout were nothing special in Amir Khan, James Kirkland, Alfredo Angulo and Liam Smith.

“It’s finally here and we’re happy it’s in Las Vegas, and we’re going to do some great events around the event,” said De La Hoya. ”Absolutely,” said De La Hoya when asked if there would be a trilogy fight between Canelo and Golovkin. ”Canelo-Triple G is a real fight. You know it’s going to be a good fight that calls for…I’m already going to call it. It can be a trilogy. You never know, but it can be a trilogy. This is the type of fight that calls for a trilogy,” said De La Hoya.

Golovkin is the best bet that Canelo has to continue to make huge money for the foreseeable future. There’s nobody else at 160 that Canelo can get big money fighting. Golovkin has picked up a huge fan base in a short period of time.

There’s nobody else at middleweight for Canelo to fight that will bring in anywhere close to the same kinds of numbers that he’ll be getting for the Golovkin fight. There are some talented fighters in the 160 pound division in Jermall Charlo and Danny Jacobs. I’m not sure if Golden Boy Promotions will want to put Canelo in with either of those guys, because they bring more risk than what they’ll bring in as far as attention with boxing fans. They both need to increase their profile by fighting against better opposition.

“This is the result of many years of hard work for Gennady, travelling around the world fighting world champions and top contenders to become an undefeated unified middleweight world champion,” said Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. “Gennady’s reward, and the fans’ reward, will be battling in the biggest and best match-up in the sport of boxing. Gennady is ready for his date with destiny.”

For Loeffler and Golovkin, this is the Super Bowl of boxing in getting a fight against Canelo. However, it’s also a tremendous fight for Canelo, because he needs a win over Golovkin to turn him into a crossover star in the sport. Canelo’s PPV buys aren’t going to be huge if he can’t become a crossover attraction. Canelo has done good PPV numbers in his fights against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr., but that’s because he was fighting guys that were already popular. But for Canelo to bring in consistently big numbers no matter who he faces, he needs to beat popular fighters like Golovkin, and he needs to beat them impressively without controversy.
