Top Rank boss Bob Arum has confirmed that Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder 3 WILL be taking place on October 9th as planned. Arum says he spoke with WBC heavyweight champion Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs) yesterday, and the fight is definitely happening.
This week, Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn expressed doubt that the Fury – Wilder III fight will be taking place on the October 9th date.
Hearn said that the fight isn’t being in the kind of money that they had hoped and that they’re “struggling” to sell it.
“We’re going to get to that fight. They’re going to fight,” said Bob Arum to ESNEWS when asked if the Fury vs. Wilder 3 fight will still be happening on October 9th. “I talked to Tyson yesterday. He’s ready to go and I know Wilder is ready to go, so it’s going to be a great fight,’ said Arum.
Despite what Arum says, boxing fans, fighters, and promoters will likely continue to doubt thatFury vs. Wilder will take place on the October 9th date.
Hearn says that the fans aren’t interested in seeing Fury and Wilder fight again, and he may be correct to a certain extent. Fans believe that this is another slamdunk win for Fury over the hapless Wilder, so they’re not even remotely interested in seeing them fight again.
With a month to go, we’ll soon find out if Fury and Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KOs) will be tangling on that date. If not, there will need to be a good excuse that the boxing public will believe.
Fury pulled out of the previously scheduled July 24th date with Wilder, saying he had COVID-19. However, there were reports that Fury was seen shortly after that inside of a casino, which led some fans to believe that he was never ill.
Soon after there, reports surfaced of Fury having had a bad camp, getting worked over by his sparring partners.
If the fight doesn’t happen this time, Fury may end up being stripped of his WBC title because he hasn’t defended it in a year and a half since winning the belt. Hearn wants Fury stripped, as does WBC interim champion Dillian Whyte.
Fury likely won’t pay any mind to the World Boxing Council stripping him because he’d likely go back to calling himself the ‘Lineal champion like he’d been doing before when he was still belt-less.
Tyson became the lineal heavyweight after beating IBF/WBA/WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. Unfortunately for Fury, he lost those belts without ever defending them because he was unable and unwilling to return to the ring in a reasonable amount of time after beating Wladimir.
